The Spartan Graduates

Post by The Spartan »

As promised in my good vent my pictures from graduation. I don't have any upclose pictures of myself yet, but I'll post one of those when someone emails them to me.

It was actually a lot of fun this time around. All the BSME grads knew each other and had quite a few classes together. So we were laughing and joking during the procession, breaking away from it so that we could keep together, as one of the grads is in a wheelchair. We were high-fiving each other as we walked up the stairs to the stage. We teased the guy who showed up with no less than 3 Honors Shawls, 2 Medals and 6 cords, "You trying to make us look bad?"

First picture is us filing in, I'm the second from the right. With the goatee.

This shot is me walking the "Last Fifty Feet" and shaking the Dean's hand while he hands me my graduation momento.

What's a graduation momento? Here it is :)

And the inside top: the lower right is a sketch of Woolf Hall, where the ME department is along with MSE, AE and IE. The upper left is Nederman Hall where most of the rest of the Engineering Department is located. And who I actually had a class with. And who also has a street named after him. And who was also the first Dean of Engineering. And President of the University for about 20 years. And when my Dad heard his name he responded by saying, "Oh. That guy." (He went to UTA too, though never graduated) Sorry, I just like that story.

Inside Bottom. It's a letter from the Dean. Everyone got the same thing but it's nice to actually get something at the graduation. At Tarleton they handed us a white cardboard tube. And we had to give that back. BTW, I'll post the text of the letter if anyone's interested. As it is I think I've rambled on to much.

2. TAXES UP THE WAZOO!
3. Stress Where will you live? what will you eat? how will you afford these things?

Word of advice: make sure you get a P.Eng even if your employer isn't keen on it. A degree is good, but a license is better. I know too many engineers who were happy with the degree and whose employers discouraged them from putting in too much effort to get the license, so that they'd be less qualified to look around for other work.

Already planning on it. My dad and his buddies, who are all either engineers, designers and what not, have been hammering that into my head since I was a kid in high school. I was going to take the FE in the Spring but I had to put it off because of a good friends wedding, but I'm going to take it this coming spring.

They're not that bad. I've been waiting something like 14 years for this and I worked one summer as a draftsman, so I know what to expect. And I'll likely have my own cubicle to work in.
2. TAXES UP THE WAZOO!
They won't be that bad. Something like 25-33% of my gross income will go to tax and social security, etc.
3. Stress Where will you live? what will you eat? how will you afford these things?
In my apartment. See the Losing Weight Sticky to get an idea of what I eat in a day. Affording these things won't be a problem. I won't be rich, but I likely won't be hurting either. Well, once I pay off a good chunk of my debt anyways... :(
So congrats, I hope I didn't ruin the mood with my jokery!

Not at all. I'm used to merciless ribbing from my peers, it's just what we do. Oh, and don't put to much stock in high school. I know it's hard to think this way at your age but by the time you're my age you'll likely look back most fondly on University and not high school. I certainly do.

Indeed, high school is nothing more than a speedbump on the way to adulthood. The only people who spend the rest of their lives reminiscing about high school are the losers who never accomplished anything afterwards. Think of Al Bundy.
