How fast is your internet?

Post by Pu-239 »

I finally stopped leaching off of my neighbor's wireless for various reasons (finally acquired a job, sick of outages, sick of being a deadbeat, and the desire to be able to use up all the bandwidth w/o being noticed, plus splitting costs w/ sister).

List downstream/upstream speed, service provider, monthly charge and maximum speeds available in your area for under 100$ [EDIT: Also post speed test results and monthly bandwidth caps]

5Mbps downstream, 2Mbps upstream (Cox Cable, Fairfax, Virginia), 55$/month (no cable TV or satellite), w/ maximum of 15Mbps downsteam if I paid 70$ a month (not doing so since I can't use that much (remaining lag appears to be browser rendering times, and I need a new computer for that, and if I paid that, I want increased upstream too). DSL not available in area.

Speedtest results:
Download Speed: 4935 kbps (616.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 1660 kbps (207.5 KB/sec transfer rate)

Cox customer service sucks (website sucks and is irritatingly dumbed down). There's a cap, but it's "very large" and unspecified.

Service: Blueyonder Broadband by Telewest
Connection: 2Mbit Cable (1024kbps down, 128kbps up)

Price: £25.00/month
Limitations: None

They'll soon be upgrading all 512kbps or 1Mbit users to 4Mbit, and all 2Mbit or 4Mbit users to 10Mbit, completely free of charge.

Cablevision's Optimum Online. 10M down, 1M up. Most times I never hit that speed because of the other server, though. On a good torrent or fast server, I do top out at 10Mbit, and I'm fully capable of uploading at 1Mbit. It's very nice, but I'm going to switch to Verizon's FIOS as soon as it's available. I have a feeling that more and more people are hopping on the neighborhood's line. As for download/upload limits, if there are any, I haven't hit it. One time I was torrenting a new version of DC, and I wound up uploading 2-3 gigs just to get a whole copy. Last week I downloaded 14 Debian CD ISOs (roughly 8.5GB) in just under three hours, and I haven't received any phonecalls yet.

Well, I'm really concerned about upload limits, since I'm letting a friend download bittorrents on my fileserver and get them through SFTP.

Oh, and why are you downloading Debian ISOs? Don't most people just get the first CD and APT everything else?

12 mbit/1mbit adsl2+ plan. With 20gb peak & 20gb off peak monthly download quota (after quota is used DL speed is reduced to 64kbps). Uploads are unmetered and uncapped. For $70 AUS /month, with bundled local phone calls & long distance. The phone has $28 AUS /month line rental, but you get that no matter who you are with.

I get 5mbit down & 896kbps up due to my router only being adsl1 and the physical distance of my line.

I pay $95 per month for cable TV, telephone, and cable modem internet to Sigecom.

I don't remember what they claim my speeds are supposed to be, but I get a test result of 3752 kbps download and 232 kbps upload at dslreports.com.

102 up
No dl limit
Edit: Advertised limit is 512k down and 106 up, so I suppose I'm doing pretty good, considering I'm in a rural area.

Subjective rating "not bad"? My subjective rating is "what a joke!" Upstream is even worse. Not to mention that it won't send upstream at all if there's any kind of router attached. I need a new provider.

This is the connection through which this board operates. It's symmetrical speed, so uploads are as fast as downloads.

Most people do, yes, but this was for a special application where I needed crap from almost all the CDs and had no internet access, and no possibility of internet access. If I'd had my druthers I would've popped in the netinstall I already had and been done with it. And as it turns out, I had to compile a lot of source anyway, but meh. Hindsight's 20/20.

Using jigdo was pretty cool, though. Just tell it to grab all 14 ISOs and walk away.

Also, Optimimum Online is only available in the Northeast. Well, really just the NYC metro area. But I've never had any problems with uploading or downloading copious amounts of data. I've got a friend who torrents constantly(like he's gonna win a prize if he keeps doing it), and there's nary a peep of complaint about it from Optimum Online.

1.5M/768K is what I'm supposed to have. My real speed is fairly close to it, but my latency and packet loss is pretty bad... $30 a month from Verizon, since they have a monopoly in this area. Too bad I don't like in like Taiwan or South Korea, where 12M is cheaper than 768 here.

Crap- I found out Cox has a monthly 10GB upload cap  - might have to switch to "Business" class service at some point and pay through the nose. I'll do so if I get a letter- I'll just tell her to cap her downloads. Too bad Speakeasy DSL isn't available in the area.

You get packet loss on your connection? That is one shitty connection.

And upload caps suck something bad.

Rogers Highspeed Cable internet. Currently a 3 mbps downstream and 384 kbs upstream and a 60 GB per month bandwidth cap (30 down 30 up essentially). Its currently $44 dollars cdn per month. We've had the service for almost 6 years now.

I'd like to upgrade to their highest level they offer which is 5 mbps downstream and 800 kbps upstream (still 60GB/month bandwidth cap though...) since its only about $5 dollars more per month.

EarthLink DSL

Communications 977.7 kilobits per second
Storage 119.3 kilobytes per second
1MB file download 8.6 seconds

I don't believe that there are any upload or download limits.

The connection at UofI is pretty comparible, although it has an unlimited download limit but a 3 GB/week upload limit.

Yeah, Verizon's network really needs some upgrading... The conditions have improved, but a few months back I was getting like 30% packet loss at peak hours. Once I did a traceroute of a site in New York (I'm in SoCal), and my packets got routed from the West Coast to the East Coast and back to the West Coast, then to the East Coast then England then East Coast and West Coast and finally to New York.

Moral of the story is avoid Verizon if at all possible.
