Took out ram stick and put it back in, now comp won't detect

Post by Captain tycho »

Fooling around in my tower, I took out a stick of 512mb DDR333 ram by popping the two holders on the top and bottom, mostly just to look at it and see if it was corroded or coated with dust, as I've been having ram problems of late. Seeing none, I put it back in correctly, but couldn't get the holders to snap into place over it. (the 'prong's the holders latch onto are sticking too far out.) I've tried pushing it in more, but I don't want to damage the ram.
Any ideas?

Push harder. It's fairly difficult to break a stick of RAM this way. Most of them actually take a bit of force to push in.

Ahh, there we go. It took ALOT of force, actually, I was afraid I was going to snap it in half. Thanks Beo. :)

Yeah. I always feel like I'm gonna break something whenever I do it.

Small tip my dad gave me today regarding cards and RAM, plug-ins like that-- often if something's not functioning, open up the tower and wiggle them a bit, then push them in a little more firmly. Worked for me-- got my video card back online...

What did I tell you in the SDN Chat? Apply force to both sides evenly. If that doesn't work, use brute force, and if it still doesn't work, you're not using enough :P

Ha! That's awesome that you were able to muscle it in. I was going to go the doom-and-gloom route and say "Did you make sure you were grounded when you did it? It only takes a very small amount of ESD to ruin something like that forever." MUAAHAHAHA....err....sorry. I'll just be going now.
