Dealing with potential pedophiles

Pour money into genetic research, in hopes of manipulating the genes of unborn fetuses, and lift this silly ban on embryonic stem-cell research? Obviously. "Treating" them and releasing them would be difficult in an atmosphere that does not loudly and constantly condemn such behavior might lead to a relapse. Imprisoning them for crimes not committed would not be just either. The only thing to do is prevent such disorders from occurring in the first place.

As urges to commit 'normal' heterosexual rape, the person has an avenue to release those urges through sex, whether consensual or commercial.

Rape isn't just about sexual urges - there are plenty of rapists who have and use more convetional outlets for their sexual urges. Rape has a strong component of domination, humilation, or even sadism - it's not just about sexual urges.

However, a pedophile (or homosexual, in earlier times) has no such release, and worse, he faces becoming a social pariah if his sexual preference is revealed, which makes him less likely to seek help.

A person who resists his urges to commit pedophilia might be outwardly normal in most respect, but I would regard not allowing oneself to have normal contact with children as abnormal.

A diabetic might look normal, but isn't. What's your point here? Mine is that if there is a problem and the person with the problem is managing it in a way that protects others from harm don't disrupt the situation.

Life-long celibacy isn't "normal" - but it's not fatal, either. If a man decides he'd rather give up sex than hurt little kids or lose his freedom... well, that's his choice, isn't it? Sure, we'd all rather see a cure for the root problem, but if there isn't one all you can do is manage the symptoms. If the person in question can control his urges then he can keep his freedom. If he can't we have no choice but to lock him up to protect others. Right now, those are the only two choices.

Maybe I'm not getting the correct gist of your statement, but it sounds like your saying Americans are more lenient towards pedophilles because we don't hold rallies against them. That is simply not true. Pedos are quiet reviled here in the US, Michael Jackson not withstanding, even by other criminals.

A I've had similar discussions in the past with a friend of mine who is studying Criminal Justice. He informed me thath if someone is convicted of having had sex with a child and sent to prison, if the general prison population finds out why they are in prison they esentially become a walking target for harassment and violence and even have a higher than average risk of being killed by fellow inmates.

So nearly all Americans have just as deep an abiding hatred for pedos as racist have a hatred for minority groups.
