On the program list, I don't see anything serious, same in the registry enteries(though I can miss here, their hard to read).

Wait for Datana before being relieved.

WTF? None of that crap has anything to do with WoW anyway. Did you try reinstalling the game?
I will mention that the internet connection is partially down. However, it doesnt even bring me to the wow screen where I could reinstall - it plays the intro music with a blank screen, white box in center with red letters saying 'input not supportd'

OK, I've got a weird problem. The last two nights that my computer will suddenly either turn off or reboot without warning. I ran a virus scan and a spyware scan, but they didn't find anything. Also, when I hit ctrl-alt-del, I can't access anything except the list of programs running, not the process list anymore. Here's my hijackthis log:

Okay, this is going to be kind of long. Leave for a few weeks, come back to find the logs piled up and Ein having much bigger things to worry about.

Argosh, you're in the clear.

Ace Pace: Yes, that will do. Autodownloaded updates will only install when logged in with Administrator rights, though. Or you can disable the Genuine Advantage checker by opening IE and selecting Tools - Manage Add-ons and using the menu that pops up. Windows Update at present time only checks for the presence of WGA rather than making sure that it's active.

Manus Celer Dei, there are three programs that I can't identify in your log; if you know they're safe, keep them, but if you don't know, kill them to be safe:

Code: Select all

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {C0D7A047-9871-E7B2-93C0-E1980CEB7F5B} - C:\DOCUME~1\Matay\APPLIC~1\LOUDOP~1\htmmail.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Rdr cash iso link] C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Blehfiverdrcash\Exitmeow.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WMA DALE] C:\PROGRA~1\ERRORD~1\Internet Vga Bind.exe
Also, you should kill the following entries from Safe Mode:

Code: Select all

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.zwdotdwjdphrfs.com/1nuOVmZTH_66bPMYUmcgF3YwAq1el6oS5JHQ1yWq7J8ce538HI1HdG42KDKIs/Jw.cgi
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.htxsyfnsammesa.com/1nuOVmZTH_59VICbRYlAOs3L0nSSk5ifyoUo4/oInEQ.html
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://www.srrrfywiruclovonceww.us/Ryda720eJYPookGUdIhAbAIMkyxc5Ijfg2JUI6SdNg7VDUl3l0DUcdhjr96DTyv0.html
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
Gil Hamilton, nothing malicious in that log, but you're carrying a rather heavy load in startup programs. This may be causing problems, especially if you have less than ~512 MB of RAM. See if there's anything you can do to reduce the number.

Soontir C'boath, I'll have to dedicate an entire post to your friend's log. See the next post.

Soontir C'boath:

Overall, this system's in a shape where I would seriously consider just wiping everything. Worms, trojans, adware, spyware, viruses, LSP hijackers and more -- this is one of the bigger menageries of malware that I've seen in one place. If you want to decontaminate it, though, I've provided what info I can.

First, download LSPFix from this site. You might need it after cleaning out because LSP hijackers often will break Internet access when killed, and LSPFix can repair it.

Your friend has got nail.exe, which is a PITA to remove, as it makes itself part of the Explorer shell and so will start up even in Safe Mode. This blog entry lists a way to successfully eliminate it. After that, kill the following entries from Safe Mode.

Code: Select all

Once done, restart into normal Windows. If you get a bunch of Winsock errors on startup or on attempting to connect to the Internet, run LSPFix and remove any entries that share names with the ones in the above list.

These are optional to remove (they eat a lot of memory and don't do much):

Also, is your friend a Muslim? "Athan" is the name for a legitimate program for reminding one to go to prayer five times a day, but spyware also hides behind the same name. If he isn't, then also eliminate:

Code: Select all

Continuing from the last post for Soontir C'boath, your friend will need to change his browsing and computing habits, or he'll be in the same situation again in a week's time. A few suggestions:

- Don't click "Yes" on everything that pops up.
- Never install "Internet Optimizers" or "spyware removers" that are advertised in popups. Check the background of every program you want to install first to make sure it's legit (use Google). Never take the company's word that it does what it says it does without supporting evidence.
- Keep up with security patches. On the next reinstall, get SP2 installed before even plugging in the network cable (slipstreaming onto an existing XP installation disc works wonders), and then catch up on patches at Windows Update before going anywhere else on the Internet.
- Install a decent firewall. The one that's activated by default on SP2 will do, but if he's stuck with SP1 in the meantime, use something like Kerio.
- Use a different browser for most web surfing, switching to IE only when compatibility issues arise. Opera is nice, and Firefox is good provided you install a good set of extensions (Adblock with Filterset.G is a minimum).

Is a shell like Avant suitable for a stopgap solution?

My previous post was actually addressed to C'boath, but it makes a decent general set of instructions on avoiding infestation as well.

A shell like Avant will be somewhat acceptable (by slowing the flood of popups and their attendant "Do you want to install X" messages, which is how most spyware gets on), but this would still rely on keeping IE fully patched and up-to-date (via either the autoupdater or Windows Update). Someone who doesn't do that might as well be running straight IE.

Yes, he is one. It is irritating to wake up at 5Am with his alarm clock...

Thank you for taking your time in this, Datana and I will tell him the advice you imposed.
I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season."

MRDOD: Some spyware, but mostly just kind of crufted (primarily junk that Sony loaded on your system on the initial install, like the things you mentioned). I'll break this into two lists -- must-kill items, and optional kills that you can override if you think you might need them (I'm looking mostly at MS Money and Quicken -- you don't need both, right?). As per usual procedure, remove these entries from Safe Mode.

As for your graphical problems, I'm guessing that your uxtheme.dll file may have gotten corrupted; try downloading a fresh copy (if you use a hacked theming DLL), or uninstall and reinstall your theming software (if you use something like Windowblinds).

Some background: My university now requires that all windows michines run a "security" program before being allowed access to the outside world. Among other things, this program installs software, rearranges some files, and screws with a number of settings. This doesn't happen for Linux (and presumably Mac) users, so using an extension for firefox, I masqueraded as a linux box to get my athentication, but not before I had let the program run for a bit. So I don't know what was installed, or what exactly it did, but I do have a few more processes running now. So without further adue:

Also, is there anything a little lighter weight than Norton for automatic virus protection and firewall?

Braedley, there doesn't appear to be anything out of the ordinary running on your system that's related to network authentication. There are two suspicious entries that I'd like to bring up, however.

Do you use a Realtek audio card? You have an entry (SOUNDMAN.EXE) that's part of a driverset for that, but is also the name of a worm.

Secondly, are you running an IIS server? Not too many people actually need this program otherwise. If not, then inetinfo.exe probably isn't needed and will just drain resources.

On the topic of virus protection and firewalls, there are several options. For pay programs, Symantec Antivirus (not Norton! Though by the same company, this is a dirrerent product) is much lighter weight and works better than Norton does, though is more expensive unless your school has a deal going on with them for it (I got a free copy while I was studying for my undergraduate degree, for instance). The Pro versions of Kerio and Sygate are pretty good and are lightweight compared to Norton, but the free versions of both will suit most purposes already (unless you have crazy port restriction rules or are running a server).

For free antivirus, you have Grisoft's AVG and alwil's Avast!. For free firewall, there's the free versions of Kerio and Sygate. All of these work significantly better than Norton software (though you may want to disable Web filtering from Kerio once installed; it causes more trouble than it's worth, and it starts nagging you after two weeks).

Yes, I do use Realtek audio (it's actually onboard sound), and thanks for the rest.

As part of trying to solve a spyware problem discussed in this thread I was advised to post a hijack this log.

bilateralrope, you have no current spyware infection on your system, based on the provided log. Based on the linked thread, Spyware Doctor is complaining about the fact that you have certain spyware distribution sites in your history list; this does not necessarily imply an infection (unless you let that .EXE run). That you visited the link in the first place is what set off Spyware Doctor's alarms. You can clear your History in IE and it should stop the warnings.

I cleared firefox's history (I only use IE for windows update, and sygate is set to ask me every time IE wants internet access). It appears to of worked.

Thanks

3rd Impact: There's nothing suspicious in that log. If there's a problem, it isn't from spyware, at least.

Doing this one for a friend. His system's been running games slowly, so there's probably something in here. He had 53 active processes when I checked, but I don't know what to kill.

A pretty nasty infection overall. It's pretty similar to the one Soontir C'boath reported a few posts up.

First, your friend is infected with Nail.exe, which can't be removed via HijackThis!. You can find a set of instructions for manual removal here. Essentially, you've got to break it enough so that it doesn't start up in Safe Mode, from which you can delete it.

The assorted spyware on this system have also embedded themselves into the Winsock file. You'll need to have LSPFix downloaded and ready in case one of them tries to cut Internet access in retaliation for being removed.

Next, restart in Safe Mode and kill the following entries via HijackThis!:

Restart, and it should be clear. If it gives errors on attempting to connect to the Internet, run LSPFix and delete any references to the files above (in particular, rlls.dll).

Finally, he has a lot of unneccessary software running. The filesharing stuff shouldn't be started up automatically all at once like that, and he has multiple antivirus programs running simultaneously (each eating into a slice of CPU time). I'd suggest that he identify things that he doesn't need immediately on startup (Real Player and Winamp Agent are prime contenders. So are some of the antivirus autoprotect programs -- he should only need one of those) and disable them to free up RAM and CPU time.
