Rethorical Question: Can people tell if someone is force sensitive as soon as they are born?

Probable Answer: No.

In other words, Obi-Wan knew of Leia's existence, but not necessarily of the fact that she was force sensitive.
I never saw it that way. My understanding is that, whether it is logical or not, it was expected that Anakin's offspring would be strong with the Force. Remember the Emperor in ESB: he said that "...the son of Skywalker must not be trained...he would be a powerful ally..."

I recognize that there is no reasonable argument for Force sensitivity to be hereditary, but it clearly was in this case.
It was for the most part. But Remember that Palpatine fully realized the threat of the Skywalker children in ESB. He may or may not have got an inkling ROTS era but there is little evidence to support it. But to assume that Palpatine would assume that Anakin's offspring would be force-adepts isn't a far fetched conclsion to draw.

As it turned out Lucas parted ways with Kurtz and all that shit changed. Anyway... as the movies go I think, while its not obvious, that the other was always going to be another Skywalker offspring. As it turned out it was Leia. But, according to Kurtz, for sure at the time of filming "the other" had not been specified by name yet.

Help me out on the details if anyone has a link or a copy or just remembers.

this is the correct answer.

at the time of TESB Leia was NOT Luke's sister. (Remember the Kiss?)This was only decided after the movie. the 'other' WAS intended to be Luke's sister but would've have been another character NOT Leia. However the decision was made to merge leia and luke's sister into the same character.

I question that, if I recall correctly the Cinema of George Lucas (I think that's the right title) book mentioned that in the early scripts Luke and Leia were already brother and sister. I might be wrong, but I'll swing by the bookstore later and double check.

well I think Lucas definately retconned it. Cuase i want to know , WHY on earth have the whole Leia, luke ,han triangle thing if you know from the beginiing that Luke and Leia are siblings. esp "the Kiss"

Here is the scene in particular:
George Lucas wrote:68. INT. HOLD – SHUTTLE

Luke sits in a small metallic cell inside the hold of the shuttle. His head is in his hands.

LUKE
Ben, help me…come to me, please Ben. I’m not strong enough to face my father. Help me to resist the Dark Side of the Force. Ben, Ben, please…

Luke looks up to see a shimmering, translucent image of Yoda standing in the tiny cell with him. Luke is startled by the vision.

LUKE
Yoda?

YODA
Ben can no longer help you. His power to stay in the netherworld has been spent. He will soon be one with the Force. His identity lost forever.

<<snip>>

YODA
If that is the way you feel…then I must turn to another for help.

LUKE
Another? Who?

YODA
The Force runs strong in the Skywalker line. If you will not destroy your father, there is only one other left who can…your sister.

LUKE
Sister!!! I don’t have a sister.

YODA
Strong with the Force is she; but untrained.

LUKE
My sister?

YODA
Taken to Alderaan by your mother, was she. Safer it was to keep you apart.

LUKE
Leia?!?

YODA
Your twin sister… If you fail to destroy your father, our only hope is she.

Luke is stunned by this bit of information, and quickly becomes lost in thought.

I will upload, and PM the link to the whole script to you. I don't want to get slammed for infringing on Lucasfilm's copyright here.

I think that ESB was written with the idea that Luke's Sister was somebody else entirely, and was written with a 9-film arc in mind. Kurtz left, and it was chopped into a 3-6 movie arc.

The "other" he spoke of is unknown, but Lucas really intended for it to be SuperShadow.

*drugs wear off*

It was Leia. Lucas screwed up!

I guess the retcon is that Obi-Wan is a senile, sexist old fart (in addition to his now well established reputation as a pathological liar).

I think the deal here is that (surprise) Lucas was making it up as he went along. That didn't stop him from continuing this tradition with the prequels, for good or for ill.

For god sakes, he lied once, maybe twice, and he honestly believed one of the lies. He is hardly a "pathological liar."

He's the biggest liar in Star Wars, next to Palpatine. Next up would probably be Yoda. Whether or not he believes the lies, is that relevant?

I guess if you want to consolidate his lies into the categories of "he lied about Anakin/Vader" and "he lied about Owen" maybe you've got a point though. My point was that he already has apparently forgotten a lot of what he knew in the prequels, so it fits in with the general disintegration of his character. Maybe he's meant to be half-senile by now and doesn't remember which is a lie and which is the truth anymore (but even while a Force ghost?), who knows.
