All the normal LAAT gunships are replaced with Mi-24 HIND gunships. (Pictured below)
The only LAAT's not replaced are the specialized AT-TE carrying ones.
Will the outcome of the battle be the same, or different?
HIND armament:
12.7-mm 4x Barrel Machinegun, YaKB-12.7:
Range (m): (practical) 1,500
Elevation/Traverse: 20° up to 60° down/ 120°
Ammo Type: HEFI, APT, Duplex, DuplexT
Rate of Fire (rpm): up to 4,500 (pilot selectable)
30-mm Twin Barrel Cannon, GSh-30K:
Range (m): (practical) 4,000
Elevation/Traverse: None (rigidly mounted)
Ammo Type: HEFI, HEI, APT, APE, CC
Rate of Fire (rpm): 300, or 2,000 to 2,600
The firepower of the LAAT missiles and rockets in AOTC was no greater than that of real life helicopter gunships. This is SEEN. In the film. (The ultimate canon). Bog standard chemical explosives.
Reply based off Mike Wong's ATOC analysis from this site:
LAAT mini-superlasers (for lack of a better name): 300GJ (from a burst not much more than a second long). For reference, IIRC, the battleship Iowa mounts 9 cannons producing no more than 200MJ...
In addition, they carry a large number of large missles--missles capable of destroying enemey wheel droids, and lighter starships...
Somehow, I don't think the hinds will be as effective....

I realize that. I just decided to call them guns.
The missiles did fuck all to the starships.
It took the big monster walking artillery pieces to take them down.
The Republicans used missiles against the smaller, cylindrical ships. It was the Federation ships which were hit with SPHA/Ts.
I won't get involved in this thread to the point of endless bickering about canon, official, overrulings, wars firepower, real life firepower, etc.
I will however point one thing out:
With the bulkier frame of the HINDs (they have a long tail boom which the LAAT's don't have) plus the presence of clumsy rotor blades (which they must keep from coming into contact with anything or they're fucked), it might be difficult to rescue the Jedi in the fashion done by the LAATs. The LAATs set down fairly close to each other in the arena around the enciricled Jedi. If this was tried with HINDs they might end up with collisions, clashing rotor blades... all manner of nastyness.

That is hard to say If they will crash into each other. I well trained pilot can set his chopper down within inches of each other. Plus Hinds have wheels they could land in one spot and roll to there holding station.
