Report Claims Men More Intelligent Than Women

Post by The Grim Squeaker »

In controversial research reported all over the place, Richard Lynn, the emeritus professor of psychology at Ulster University claims that, on average, men are more intelligent than women.
Let battle commence!
As the research is not yet published there's nothing more to go on than the press reports.
The co-author of the study, Dr Irwing, a senior lecturer in organisational psychology at Manchester University, is apologetic about the findings.
In the BBC News report he states that the paper will go on to argue that despite their disadvantage in IQ, there is evidence that women utilise their (lesser!) talents better than men.
This simply begs the question of what use IQ tests are if they don't predict anything in the real world."

Sounds interesting, know we just need the article itself to come out, so it can be lambasted, and held secretly in the hearts of all males :P .

So how long does everyone think it'll be before the FemiNazis are calling for these researchers to be fired?

I really wonder how long it will be before we actually realise that its impossible to actually quantify and test intelligence.

Didnt a harvard dean type person get fired for saying that was an interesting theory?

I got in some good arguments with my femnazi friends about it.

Sad thing is if the argument was the other way around, the femnazis would be going bonkers chanting it as holy writ.

Actually I think he said something along the lines of men being better at math, etc. than women and were thus better suited for certain careers. I don't remember him having said that men were actually smarter though.

I thought he said that women didn't want careers in math/science/engineering; they simply have different tastes than men. I could be wrong, however; the affair brought up a lot of discussion in that vein.

In relation to the study : I don't think "intelligence" is even a real quality to begin with. Intelligence is a collection of abilities we lump together, not some unitary ability that can be compared in a linear fashion. After all, how many people do you know who are smart at everything ?
It's like calling someone "athletic". Do you mean a gymnast ? A marathoner ? A weightlifter ? The concept of ntelligence is useful for imprecise purposes; really stupid or really smart people are easy to disinguish from each other. However, the closer you look at the human mind, the less useful the concept is.
Who has more intelligence ? The math genius who is clueless about people, or someone who reads people like a book but can't handle math ? How about the theorist who can't figure out how to implement his ideas, and the engineer who can, but can't come up with the ideas ?

For that matter :
In the BBC News report he states that the paper will go on to argue that despite their disadvantage in IQ, there is evidence that women utilise their (lesser!) talents better than men.
That sounds like a form of intelligence in itself. Frankly, we don't even have a good objective definition of "general intelligence", much less a good way to measure it - assuming it even exists.

Finally, on a practical note; I see women outwit men all the time ( and the other way round, of course ).

Well the only reason women don't realize how much smarter men are is because whenever they're around we're usually checking out their TnA too much to actually say something intelligent!

If it used a wide age band sample, it's easy to explain the disparity. Your intellectual ability is in no small part training, and even in Western countries, girls were until quite recently, sometimes still are, pressured to undertake less intellectual education. Domestic science ring a bell with anyone?

I wouldn't consider this necessarily intrinsic. Girls are still far less pressured for intelligence than men I have seen in school (and I'm currently in high school so I see it a lot.)

Though I might mention at my school, the top three students both this Senior year and last were female, including definitely science and math areas. Of course, their families value knowledge.

I've said this before, in similarly heated terms:

THINK STATISTICALLY, DAMN YOU!

Individual counterexamples don't refute statistical statements about large populations. Whenever studies like this come out, some dumbass always says something like "I know lots of smart women!", and that doesn't prove shit. You didn't go that far, but since you're the first to go near there I'm flaming you: "counterexamples" don't have any bearing on this discussion.

On the subject of "I've seen women trick men before", in addition to sketerpot's I AM YELLANG!! text I'd like to add that men really can't pull things over on women with the same frequency as the reverse in public like that for the same reasons why men can't slap women back or insult them if they are insulted. It's not allowed.

NecronLord is also right-
Women were until recently pressured to be less smart and take dumb classes (especially in Math and Science). Nowadays men are as equally pressured to be fashionably brainless, so it measures out.

MRDOD, I'd consider that inaccurate.

One of the driving differences I see is that for women it's kind of implied you can always get married and just take care of the kids. Truth be told, that's not as common a thought as a 'backup option' as for men, and being a fulltime wife doesn't take a PHD. Therefore, for girls the brainless option is considered completely acceptable, if they can assume you are just opting for that.

It was the Harvard president. He got in trouble for saying that we should study the reasons why women were not succeeding in math and science to the same extent that men were.

One thing about IQ tests, is that by their very nature they also test the ability of people to take tests (taking tests being a learnt skill). As a result, if you are no good at taking tests, or if, for example, you have a hideous pain in your abdomen, such that it feels as though your ovaries are trying to rip your uterus to shreds on the day of the test, then your score will be lower than it would normally be.

How can we be certain that this discrepancy is not due to men being better suited for a test situation than women?

To add to the above pots, what about people who are geniuses but when they enter a test room their mind goes blank? I agree that there is no accurate way to test whether men or women are smartert and Pick brings up good points as well.
