Playing with my new camera
I suspected, but could not truly appreciate what a shitty camera my old digicam was until I got a new one. This is a picture of Fuzzy, taken from across the room at high zoom:
This is a picture from Marineland, because I wanted to see how well it would do while capturing a fast-moving scene such as a guy being thrown into the air by a dolphin:
And this is a butterfly landing on David's head:
Taken from my online photo album in the "2005" section.

"The rest of the poem plays upon that pun. On the contrary, says Catullus, although my verses are soft (molliculi ac parum pudici in line 8, reversing the play on words), they can arouse even limp old men. Should Furius and Aurelius have any remaining doubts about Catullus' virility, he offers to fuck them anally and orally to prove otherwise." - Catullus 16, Wikipedia

I didn't get quite as nice a digicam as that Nikon DSLR you bought, but the difference between my old Olympus D-510 and my new Panasonic FZ-20 is night and day.
12x zoom in action
bounce flash in action
Firetruck
You might want to buy a Nikon Speedlite flash for indoor pics.
Bounce flash and diffused lighting can make all the difference between an OK picture and a fantastic one.
The gun pics would have turned out awful with the built in flash.
I was lucky in that the HS-5400 flash (one damn powerful flash with a GN of 177) from my Minolta SLR works with my digicam, but only in full manual mode.
Oh yeah, here's one of my new dog.

A quick search reveals that the camera is a Nikon D50, which costs around $850-900US according to a quick internet price check.Pick wrote:Good God... soory if redundant, how much did that cost? I'm wondering if I should ask for that as my birthday present...

Just so you know, it's a six megapixel camera. The resolution is 3008x2000.DPDarkPrimus wrote:Geez! What's the native resolution of those pics!
To be honest, I don't remember. I was on vacation and was really just playing around with the settings. Actually, now that I think about it, I think the camera has a built-in "sports photography" auto-setting which I used without modification. Also, what speed was that dolphin picture taken at?

Do you plan on buying more lenses and accessories?
I found that owning an SLR was a money pit when I wound up spending more on lenses and flash equipment (the flash alone was $300) for my Minolta 35mm SLR than I spent for the body.
If you do buy a Speedlite, get the Lumiquest Pocket Bouncer for it.
This $20 gimmick eliminates the 'hot spot' you can get with direct flash.

I already have the bigger lens for longer shots (although I probably won't use that too often, it's still good to have), and I picked up a Nikon SB600 speedlight. It integrates neatly with the camera but I'm still messing around trying to learn how to best use it. It definitely helps with indoor shots, though.Glocksman wrote:Do you plan on buying more lenses and accessories?
Well, I was planning to go to NYC for a vacation this summer and got fucked over by scheduling problems, so I ended up not going. Hence, I had a bunch of money that I was planning to spend on the vacation and ... well, you can fill in the rest.I found that owning an SLR was a money pit when I wound up spending more on lenses and flash equipment (the flash alone was $300) for my Minolta 35mm SLR than I spent for the body.
BTW, my wife is actually pleased at the purchase, despite the money. That's because she has always complained that I don't take enough pictures and we aren't "documenting our lives" very well, as she puts it. But with the new camera, I'm being a much more conscientious photographer, bringing it along on trips and making sure to take lots of pictures. It's really quite a motivator, being able to take pictures that don't suck.
