My lappy's hot...

Post by tumbletom »

I was wondering how hot a laptop is supposed to be and not have it screw it self up. I got an AMD Turion processor, and I think its running really hot for a laptop (though I really have no experience with laptops because this is my first one so im not sure whats normal)

Anyway, I guess my question is if it is normal for a laptop to be burning hot after typing or looking at stuff on the internet...

Also do centrinos run cooler?

Centrio, just so you know, merely means it's a pentium M with an onboard wireless card. But yes, they do get hot. When idling, the machine can get fairly "warm", both in the lap and the "free space" below the keyboard. When gaming it get uncomfortably warm for the hands, and down right burning hot in the rear. I have spent many, many hours playing games at these temperatures without problem (other than the mild discomfort). If you really dislike the heat, get a mouse/keyboard, or if you perfer to game in your recliner, as I do, get something to put between your lap and your laptop and you'll find it's much more liveable.

Centrinos, or more specificly Pentium M's are the coolest CPU's out there, but Turion are not that far hotter. Do you have a CPU tempature gauge somewhere in the PC that you can tell us what the tempature is? If you lack a tempature gauge, Si-Soft Sandra(aside from being a good information tool) has one under the Motherboard catagory.

I don't know if it's normal and I'm sure it's not healthy, but there are times when you can feel the heat coming off the bottom of my laptop through a centimetre of cheap wood table. Worrying... :?

If you've got a P4 or Celeron desktop processor in it (like my old Dell Inspiron 1100) that's probably normal.
If it's a P-M (not a P4-M), it's not normal.

That's ok then, quick online check suggests it's probably a Celeron in it. Phew.

Yeah I tried to see my cpu temp using the bios but it didnt show anything. I got that Si-Soft thingy and tried it out and it says that I have no environment monitors in my lappy :?

Anyway, its not the discomfort thats bothering me,( Though how it can't be good to have something this hot this close to your balls :P ), Its just Im worried that Ill ruin this new lappy.

Trust me, laptops get hot, it seems like a lot, but you'll get used to it. If you are playing games, or the machine is sitting around all the time, it's going to get warm, there's no avoiding it. The best thing you can do is make sure there's plenty of space between the surface it's on and the fans, usually the pads don't keep the machine far enough off the surface it's on to really do this, so stick like a fork or something so the rear of the machine (if that's where your fans out) is an inch or two away from the surface, it'll make a big difference. If your gaming on your lap, position the laptop so that the fan vents aren't pointing into your leg.

Actually if you have any laptop, and are a male, don't put it on your lap at all. Laptops create heat, which radiates in all directions. Your balls are hanging away from your body to keep them cool, the heat radiating from that laptop is definitely not helping. Que lowered sperm counts and infertility (not that you can't have babies, it's just harder to do so), which could be long term.

Here's a suggestion. Get a few small blocks of wood or something-- hell, crushed drink cans (make sure you get the drink out first, of course) will do-- put 'em under the ass end of the laptop. Make sure they won't slide about. Gives the air a bit of extra room to circulate, helps out the cooling fan. Trust me, it's a good idea... just make sure they don't block the fan.

Depending on where the fans are, I've used silverware to give the fans some extra space, hehe

They do make litle stands with rubber grippies on them so it'll stay in place. They're fairly cheap.

Well, my battery has this jutting out portion that is kind of standish---it raises the back of my lappy about an inch.
