XP trouble

Post by Enigma »

I am having trouble loading XP. It doesn't complete the boot up and instead hangs at the last second. The only program I can use is the taskmanager and it shows that I have 34 processes with at least 5 being svchost.exe. How can I fix this?

Remote Call Procedure is one of the basic services that makes Windows work. A whole lot of other fundamental services depend on RPC in order to function.

Try booting into safe mode and running a virus scanner.

From the very first hit of Googling "how do I get into safe mode":
When booting your system, as soon as the first (POST) screen appears showing your memory and hardware information, start pressing 'F8.'

Can you get us a list of the running processes in task manager? 34 sounds like a lot for a system that hasn't finished starting.

Is one of the processes explorer.exe? If not select File -> New Task (Run) and type 'explorer' in Task Manager.

Start -> Setting -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Event Viewer
Are there any errors under 'System' or 'Application'?

If you can, download HijackThis from http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/ and post the logfile in http://bbs.stardestroyer.net/viewtopic.php?t=54586 to make sure you're free of or to get rid of any viruses/ad&spyware.

Are you using Kazaa, some other filesharing app, or running 'ad supported software'?
Over the last 2 weeks I've worked on 4 systems (not my own :P ) that were loaded down with so much spy- and adware that either Windows simply wouldn't boot or networking was fucked.
The first one I spent 4 hours in safe mode removing the shit. :x
The other 3, I said 'fuck it' and nuked the HD with a complete reinstall.

I nuked the hard drive and reinstalled XP. Basically that is all I could do. Normal and Safe modes didn't work.
