Chanaz Mitchell, spokeswoman for the National Network on Violence against Women, says although it is a good idea for women to protect themselves, men should take responsibility for their actions.

"We still need to focus on men as perpetrators of this heinous crime."
Yet another one of these fuckhead who seem to think rape is a crime perpetrated by all men against all women. Small problem: most men have not, and will not, do such a thing, and they are thus not fucking accountable, anymore than a newborn German kid is responsible for the god damn Holocaust.

Are not both options illegal in the country in question?
Hard to say, given the rapidly-changing nature of the law in the new South Africa, but...

Although the laws around possession of firearms is being tightened up a lot, it is not yet illegal to own a gun. South Africa also does not have any laws against concealable weapons, like the retarded statutes of New York. Also, AFAIK, there is absolutely no legislation against knife ownership.

There have been some nasty cases of people defending themselves, but then getting in trouble for not following the letter of the law, but not much worse than in some areas of the USA. Like in any liberal state, there is a constant conflict between the need for self-defence, and the need to prevent vigilantism.

As for the barbed wire and electric fences: Does that really surprise anyone here? Fuck, I've lived with it for so long I just take it for granted. It's usually unobtrusive, though. People just add a foot-high, barbed, electrified fence on top of a normal tall wall, so it's not as if we have eight-foot electric fences around every property, like the one around the old East Germany.
