Too "sexy" to teach religion Italy academic told

ROME (Reuters) - Was it her looks or lifestyle that led the Roman Catholic Church to cause a minor media frenzy by firing an Italian religion teacher this year?

Caterina Bonci said Church authorities decided she was just too attractive and dressed too sexy to teach religion after 14 years on the job.

The Church says it sacked the 38-year-old blonde from the central Adriatic city of Fano because she is divorced.

No matter who is right, Bonci has been all over the Italian media
demanding to go back to her job teaching religion to children in state schools on behalf of the local diocese.

She said she has never hidden her 2000 divorce from Church authorities, dresses down when teaching and defended her right to dress how she likes in her private life.

"I don't see what it matters if a teacher is good looking or not as long she is qualified," she told Reuters by telephone.

"In school, I dressed normally. In my private life, I have every right to dress any way I want."

Local media quoted lawyers for the diocese as saying she was fired because she was divorced and so should not be teaching religion for a Church that does not recognise divorce.

Even Italy's leading newspaper, Corriere della Sera, gave readers a break from pages of stories about scandal at the Bank of Italy and government bickering with the teasing headline:

"Teacher in mini-skirt fired by diocese".

Bonci said she separated from her husband in 1995 and divorced in 2000 and that both events had not affected her job or raised eyebrows from her employers at the time.

She said reports that fathers accompanied their children to religion classes so they could look at her meant little to her as long as the children came to class.

"When a woman is considered too sexy and attractive in a small town it becomes a big thing," she said.

Bonci has now become a minor celebrity on the Adriatic coast and national television talk shows are queuing up to interview her, but she says she want only one thing.

"I would like my job back. I think it is my right," she said.

I've had hotter teachers then that. No offense to that lady... although it still seems awfully messed up of the catholic church to fire her because she was too sexy. Do they only want ugly teachers?

I've seen better. No stractch that, i've HAD better...out of the maybe three times i had any...

I hope she sues them brutally though, cause that is fucking rediculous to fire someone for being 'too sexy'. In America we have lawyers who get you three or for million for that kind of bullshit.

I smell sour grape type BS. The reason the Church gave sounds far more plausible. Not that sacking someone because they are divorced makes sense in and of itself, mind you, just that it is far more likely the reason.

She had been divorced for like... 5 years beforehand, though. Although I imagine she didn't exactly get sexier as she aged... odd.

Pfft. She is just being a whiney bitch with an overinflated ego. And the RCC are being tight-asses, no surprise there.

Presumably the reason it took so long to get to her was beurocratic inertia or perhaps someone sicced them on her/drew their attention to her due to a personal vendetta or her being difficult to work with or somesuch.

Did you happen to take certain cultural things into account? Blondes aren't all that common in Italy aside from the northernmost regions, so they generally draw comparatively more attention from men than dark-haired women and are, all other things being equal, often considered more attractive. I'd also like to see more than just that one pic in the Yahoo article to pass judgment, becasue sometimes photos can be really unflattering.

So while she might not be the most beautiful woman on the planet, this talk about her being ugly is, at the very least, ridiculous. Not my type, no, but I'm not at all surprised that some do find her attractive.

More crucially, the way she dresses is probably more important than her actual looks. If she dresses the same way she was in that pic while teaching, I can probably see why the RCC would be miffed.

That's not about us Italian, it's about the Vatican and the agreement the government has with the Catholic Church.

As it has already been said, she got fired because she was divorced. I can say that with a good level of certainity since it has been Vatican's standard modus operandi to give the sack to single parents, divorced, non-catholics, etc.

And I know it is fuckup up beyond belief, but the stupid Italian law requires religion teacher to be selected by the bishops and the vatican who can remove them 'on moral grounds'. No appeal.

What's even worse is that they are no more suitable to teach religion but are not fired, so they are to tech 'other subject', for example math, or science.

I'm probably unpatriotic for saying that, but I hate Italy.

And, obviously, they are paid by the state.
Their classes are optional, but usually if you don't attend them you get stranded in the school building without a teacher (and your family doesn't get a tax reduction).

hell at least our Italian Sex Ed teacher in High School was nice to look at, and very classy/conservativly dressed. (and she made fun of the dress slit rules)

I wish I had teachers that hot when I was in school. I don't see what's so bad looking about her, if I was single I'd do her.
