Can't wait.Science vs. Religion. Evolution vs. Creation. It is an age-old battle whose time has come. “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” will gather together all the experts (or at least those who will talk to them), travel to the places that matter in the debate (basic cable budget permitting) and ultimately settle the controversy once and for all. “Evolution Schmevolution: A Daily Show Special Report” will premiere on Monday, September 12 and air nightly at 11:00 p.m. through September 15.
For one full week, “The Daily Show” goes in-depth, around, through and quite possibly under, one of the hottest hot-button issues facing our nation: evolution. It’s the accepted theory on the origin of life by an overwhelming majority of the world’s biologists, but maybe they’re all wrong. What’s so great about the scientific method anyway?

FS. Science vs. Religion has nothing to do with Creationism vs. Evolution. To make a clear dividing line is to forget how much religion is behind the evolution and how many people claiming to be scientists are behind the Creationist lines.

I love the ad:
"Did we evolve over millions of years? Or did God create us in six days? Or... did something that acts a lot like God intelligently design us?"

Anyway, I am VERY much looking forward to it. I hope I can find it to download after, if it's as good as I'm expecting it to be...

By "how much religion is behind the evolution", do you mean that there's alot of religious people who support evolution? If so, then that's kind of a "no shit sherlock" statement. The Guid wrote:FS. Bullshit. You may be thinking of Social Darwinism, which took his good name, fucked it up the ass for a few hours, then claimed that they were following his ideas.FedRebel wrote:I have no ideaMolyneux wrote:...what religion is there behind evolution? The Guid wrote:FS. Darwin himself was, by all accounts, a pretty interesting guy. He gradually changed from a devout Christian to an agnostic over the course of his life (He did NOT have a deathbed conversion!), was at odds with the first proponents of eugenics (including one of his cousins), and seems to have been pleasant in personality.

Jon Stewart has already theorized that it is only a matter of time when NASA will betaken out of government hands and is instead run by the church...
Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."
In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!
If all you want to do is have some harmless, mindless fun, go H3RE INST3ADZ0RZ!!
Grrr! Fight my Brute, you pansy!

I agree on both counts. I was just getting annoyed at how they lump Religion into the vs. Science category rather arbiterily, especially in this particular case.General Zod wrote:By "how much religion is behind the evolution", do you mean that there's alot of religious people who support evolution? Intelligent Design/Creationism vs. Evolution, for all intents and purposes, -is- religion vs science. Given the sheer amount of times it's been debunked, it should be pretty obvious that creationism simply isn't a valid scientific theory, and basically is another fancy way of saying "We know that life is really really complex, and we can't explain everything. Therefore God did it."The Guid wrote:I agree on both counts. I don't hold this position however some cheap creationist sites try to use quotes from personal letters to their advantage, and then there's my Psyc 101 professor who tries to convince his classes of this.
Darwins Conversion, what I have:
The Lady Hope Story: A Widespread Falsehood
A few more details on the spread of the story and its subsequent rebuttal,
taken from the book "The Survival of Charles Darwin: a Biography of a Man and
an Idea" by Ronald W. Clark, published by Weidenfeld & Nicholson, 1985
(p. 199)
`Shortly after his death, Lady Hope addressed a gathering of young men and
women at the educational establishment founded by the evangelist Dwight Lyman
Moody at Northfield, Massachusetts. She had, she maintained, visited Darwin on
his deathbed. He had been reading the Epistle to the Hebrews, had asked for
the local Sunday school to sing in a summerhouse on the grounds, and had
confessed: "How I wish I had not expressed my theory of evolution as I have
done." He went on, she said, to say that he would like her to gather a
congregation since he "would like to speak to them of Christ Jesus and His
salvation, being in a state where he was eagerly savouring the heavenly
anticipation of bliss."
`With Moody's encouragement, Lady Hope's story was printed in the Boston
_Watchman Examiner_. The story spread, and the claims were republished as late
as October 1955 in the _Reformation Review_ and in the _Monthly Record of the
Free Church of Scotland_ in February 1957. These attempts to fudge Darwin's
story had already been exposed for what they were, first by his daughter
Henrietta after they had been revived in 1922. "I was present at his
deathbed," she wrote in the _Christian_ for February 23, 1922. "Lady Hope was
not present during his last illness, or any illness. I believe he never even
saw her, but in any case she had no influence over him in any department of
thought or belief. He never recanted any of his scientific views, either then
or earlier. We think the story of his conversion was fabricated in the U.S.A.
. . . The whole story has no foundation whatever."' (Ellipsis is in the book)
Clark's source for Lady Hope's supposed quotations of Darwin is given as
"Down, the Home of the Darwins: The Story of a House and the People Who Lived
There" by Sir Hedley Atkins KBE, published by Phillimore for the Royal College
of Surgeons of England, 1974.
Henrietta's rebuttal is referenced more fully as: Mrs R B Litchfield, "Charles
Darwin's Death-Bed: Story of Conversion Denied," _The Christian_, February 23,
1922, p. 12.

I would note that, should Mike read this, the page is wrong in listing Palestinians as seperate from Arabs. They're as 'Semitic' as the Jews according to the biblical mentality, given that Palestinians are to all intents and purpouses, a group of Arabs.Haruko wrote:Evolution & White Supremacism.

Science and religion are polar opposites. As disciplines and philosophies they are diametrically opposed in almost every single way. They can coexist, but only by making concessions to each other- agreeing on areas where one is absent and the other dominates. Yes, there are religious scientists- they just leave their science at the door when they go to church and (hopefully) leave their religion at the door when they go to work. The Guid wrote:I agree on both counts. Whenever you're debating on which one takes preference in any given area (e.g. school) you have a "science vs. religion" conflict.

Hell, bring Giger's Alien to life an unleash a dozen in a quiet rural community in Kansas. I'd fall down on my knees in rapture.
