Close Combat multiplayer anyone?

Close Combat multiplayer anyone?
I was always a big fan of the series. They were WW2 RTS games but not like the bulk that are on the market. Basicly, both sides get a handfull of units and squads and with that, you got have to conquer the map. It requires a lot of micromanagment (ammo can run out, units have morale, etc...) but the action is slowpaced.
Sure, it also has some flaws, most importantly a weak AI. I don't think I ever lost against the computer.
Thats why I ask if someone might be interested in a multiplayer game? (if the timezone allows it)

Wow I was thinking of making a Close Combat thread yesterday, what a coincidence. It was such an amazing game because its main selling point was realism. Especially noteworthy was the psychological modeling of how soldiers behave under fire. It is something I have not seen in another game. I wish a new Close Combat game came out this time set in modern era. Somewhat like SPMBT done in real time.
Anyway I got Close Combat 3 (probably the best game in the series) and Close Combat 4 (which I disliked a lot). My time zone is GMT +6. You can contact me about the game via MSN Messenger at captainmittens@gmail.com.

Cool, I got CC3 since yesterday (took me after a 6 years and 3 days to find it - huzzah for bittorrent *cough*) and now I got all 5 of them. True, CC3 is probably the best (I liked the strategic map in CC4 & CC5 tough - I believe you could play small campain in multiplayer against eachother).
GMT+6 might be troublesome (GMT+1 here), but perhaps in the weekend or so (I'll add you in my msn tonight).
Recently, I also found out about this site (the reason I reinstalled CC in the first place). Appearantly there is still an active community hanging around.

In my defence, my armor consisted of 1 upgraded Panzer III, one Panzer II and 2 captured French tanks. Needless to say, they sucked donkey balls. On the other hand, she had more armor (and better quality too) than I had units that could get trough the armorweemadando wrote:Clearly that was merely superior local knowledge of terrain... Right? Riiiiiight?
We played 3 maps, 2 maps were in the open and one city map. So yeah, apart from a succesfull ambush or two I got steamrolled in the plains, but my infantry owned the city map (+ heavy mortars are fun!)
Final score: 1-2

Typical example from the brillant mastermind(Me myself and I)
I lure the yankiee dogs in close, get them advancing across a field towards a three story farmhouse surrounded by low stone walls.
To the north I have a pair of snipers on a hill, to the south behind a ditch line and hidden behind a row of hedges I have a Panzer III backed up by a scout squad. The rest of my units are holding down the rest of their forces with supressing fire while this line of advance has been left clear and not a thing has shot at them.
So I let them close to within thirty meters. I have almost two full platoons worth strung out across this field.
What happens?
OPEN FIRE Two MG 42s, a pair of Snipers, a scout squad open up. My Panzer III bursts through the Hedge and opens up with its two inhull MG34's and its 50mm.
Result? After five minutes of sustained firing I have exactly six dead bodies in that field. Not twenty, not thirty or the more realistic all of them dead. Flat, no cover aside from three inch tall grass and somehow with a grand total of 2300 mg rounds, and 14 shots each from the snipers I only have six KIA's and a Incap to show for all my efforts...

Which annoyed me to no end that the most relieble method of killing infantry was to use morters from over 200 meters firing blind.weemadando wrote:Which, Mr Bean, is why you should have had your entire support section made up of heavy mortars. Start dropping those babies into the killing zone and its game over for the infantry.
Oh and the fact that Stuarts could kill an entire Panther crew in one hit FROM THE FRONT... You know, the little box tank with the 37mm gun? I guess the crew was standing in a single file line in front of the tank.

It disturbs me more when a single Stuart can take out a Panther.
Never ever play Codename Panzers. Its bullshit. When you have 7 PzIII's, and 3 88's on defense and 2 Matildas attack, the Matildas should not be able to kill 3 PzIII's and severely damage 2 more before dying themselves...
I really don't like the way some games are skewed in the favour of the "good guys". Find a better way of balancing it morons.

Matilidas aginsts 88s? They should @#$@$ DIE, With no progress or causlties inflicted. Matilidas were giant, wallowing mobile bunkers, with tiny guns and poor optics(Both aiming and acutal eyesight area).weemadando wrote:It disturbs me more when a single Stuart can take out a Panther.

I think some of the terrian generator is fundemently bugged in nearly every single verison of close combat were you have areas of the map were units are nieh invicible from gunfire, and others where a errant shot from half a mile always lands between their eyes. My elite Tiger team should not miss a Sherman four times if its only a hundred meters away right in front of them in plain site on the main road. And yet my MG-42 team should not expend 600 rounds per kill. But if I move them one inch up they switch the Mg from "Scare slightly" to "Freken Kill-O-Zaps" and suddenly kill everyone.Stark wrote:Does anyone understand lethality in this game? At first I thought it was because of my overuse of fast move: but when a squad hiding in cover gets destroyed in two bursts from an MG, and then another of my squads (just prone on the grass) holds up the entire enemy attack (coming through some bocage) until they run out of ammo something is wrong.

The thing that bothers me most is hiding AT guns inside houses. It is an excellent strategy since they are harder to spot inside a building and yet can still shoot at tanks. Was it really possible to place something like a 45 mm AT gun inside a house ?Stark wrote:Does anyone understand lethality in this game? Yay for "Fiesta Holes". I make a lot of those while playing Soldiers: Heroes of WW2. Drive a Stug into a building and have the gun barely poking out the front window with a view down a street. Carnage ensues.
Though, I must say, having a pak75 inside a house in CC:IN is often a GREAT help. I do find however that disabling with indirect mortar fire is often just as good, as is the slightly less "friendly" sturmpioniere rush.

They can? Are we still talking about the same game?Mr Bean wrote:weemadando wrote: Oh and the fact that Stuarts could kill an entire Panther crew in one hit FROM THE FRONT... You know, the little box tank with the 37mm gun? I guess the crew was standing in a single file line in front of the tank.
Bah, I discovered the huge CC modscene which has something for everyones flavor. So far I've tried the Utah mod and at first sight, it seemed both harder and prettier than the vanilla version
Less luck with playing it multiplayer tough. Spent 1.5 hors to find the problem and still nothing. I think it has something to do with my router.
Will have to try again this evening
They could in Close Combat 1, Close Combat 2 Bridge to far and in Close Combat 3 Russian Front with the Lend Lease Stuart they still could.wautd wrote:

Well, my far away memory remembers the stuart as a suprisingly good tank for its size so you might be right. I think its been improved in 4 & 5 tough, and certainly in the modsMr Bean wrote:They could in Close Combat 1, Close Combat 2 Bridge to far and in Close Combat 3 Russian Front with the Lend Lease Stuart they still could.wautd wrote:

By the way, in games like C&C or starcraft, tanks get damaged by small arms fire so NAH!
About my problem with multiplayer:
Last night I reinstalled CC5 and went looking for a multiplayer game via Gamespy. I found a (very patient) player who was willing to play a game with me, but everytime he hosted a game and the game launched I just get a black screen with my mousepointer. The only way I can shut it down is bij control-alt-delete because the "program does not respond" (ps singleplayer runs fine).
When I host a game, everything seems to go well, except that the other guy doesnt join in.
(PS. I disabled firewall in case you wondered)
The previous time I played CC5 multiplayer I had no problems at all. However, during the time, I still was using an internal modem. Now I have a wireless router. Maybe the problem lays here? (when I create a game in gamespy I get a warning with different IP adresses. (I'll post the full message when I'm back home)
Any toughts?
The thing was it was not a suprising good tank, aginst anything bigger than a Chi-Ha, Panzer II or even a convert 7TP(Polish) the thing was a death trap.wautd wrote:Well, my far away memory remembers the stuart as a suprisingly good tank for its size so you might be right. The cannon and armor both were piss poor. Not as bad as the Japanse Ha-Go(Which could be pentrated by BARs) but pretty bad. They had a hard time getting through the side armor of Panzer III's let alone the Front armor of Panther's (Which even 76mm Shermans had alot of trouble with except at point blank range)
And C&C is never a good indicated of realism, I mean when's the last time any vechical had anything other than its main gun
