I'm thinking of buying an X box. This would be the first console I've owned since the super Nintendo of years long passed.
I really like halo, and halo2 and a lot of other X box titles I've played with my friends.
Is the 360 going to be backwards compatible, or should I just go head and by the classic brick?

Oh, don't forget that the XBox 360's backwards compatability does not work unless you have the hard drive. The hard drive costs $99 and the system costs $300. Alternatively, there is the $399 bundle with the hard drive AND a wireless controller, remote control, headset, and a few other goodies (same price), so it'd be stupid not to buy the bundle.
So if you get a 360 and want to play the old games, expect to pay $399.
Personally I'd get a GameCube (I'm assuming you are a PC gamer?) simply because most of the XBox games like Halo are the ones I'd rather play on a PC, and the GC is the cheapest system ($99 with a controller and Super Smash Bros) which saves you money on a 360, but buy what you wish.
Keep an eye on the Revolution now that we've seen the controller
