Cults and Self

Post by Kitsune »

I was watching the old History Channel program "The Twentieth Century" and the episode was about cults. They were talking about the Heaven's Gate cult.

There is something I don't understand about cults in general. One of the "rules" of being a member of Heaven's Gate is to give up a sense of self, even in thinking. You need to have a sameness.

I am me, I cannot see changing and becoming something like a robot. I just see this sameness as destroying your self and no longer really you. What would someone want to do that?
"He that would make his own liberty secure must guard even his enemy from oppression; for if he violates this duty, he establishes a precedent that will reach to himself."
Thomas Paine

"For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten."
Ecclesiastes 9:5 (KJV)

It's a way of getting people to be submissive and unquestioning so you can shove more bullshit down their throats. The more bullshit you shove down unquestioning throats, the more those they will worship you and give you money. They may even drink the punch you're serving!

There's a reason why cults prey on the miserable. If a person's life has been shit up until that moment, I wouldn't be too surprised if they'd willingly give up their sense of self.
