SW Whitestar/Defiant Equivelent
Does the SW galaxy have a Whitestar/Defiant Equivelent?
I ask because i'm wanting to write a SW/B5 Fanfic and i wanted to know if the Empire had a ship that had the speed and maneuvability of Whitestar, with SW Equivelent firepower.
Thanks for your time.

Dude, you guys are SO Forgetting the Marauder Corvette. 200 meters. Room for 8 Dual Turbolaser Turrets and Torpedo launchers. Can easily fly in Atmosphere as well as space... Oh yea, That be a kick-ass ship along Defiant/Whitestar lines.
Praying is another way of doing nothing helpful

We only see it in action in the X-wing/Tie Fighter games. It was comparable to any other corvette. But those are video game mechanics so we can expect them to be more maneuverable than they are in the games.
The Marauder was also in one of the Han Solo books. I can't recall, but it may have mentioned something about the maneuverability.

You must remember that the situation is a bit different in Star Wars. The Defiant has its firepower-size ratio because all the other Fed ships are hybird military/science ships and therefore have lots of wasted space, and the Defiant is a dedicated warship. The Whitestar is simply superior technology. In Star Wars, all warships are full warships and technology is pretty much the same across the galaxy, hence there is no exact approximation.
The Marauder is also in VotF.

True, however ships like the Corellian Gunship and Warrior Gunship sacrifice range, crew comfort, and multi-role capability to pack as much firepower, speed, and manueverability into a 100-200 meter ship as possible. This allows them to take on ships larger than themselves, which is essentially what Whitestars and Defiants are for.

The closest equivalent to a White Star would probably be more similar to a Shrike-LAC from the Honorverse. Basically it would be a space-borne version of the SPHA-T gun (or a scaled down version of the Separatist frigate, if you prefer) - with all the limitations and weaknesses theroef (limited number of times to fire, slow recharge rates, sluggishness/low endurance, etc.)
Parrt of the problem is, packing too much firepower into too small a package is going to spell disaster recoil-wise (an SPHA-T sized target packing the firepower of a HTL turret for example will acceclerate a 100,000 ton "vessel" by hundreds of thousands of gees with a single shot, and require minutes to recharge. It would also require a million-ton object by tens of thousands of gees.)
Best bet would be to use some sort of remote-power "transmission" system from a separate armored platform (the "carrier" perhaps - again borrowing from the WEberverse "Shrike LAC" concept..) to both provide power to the ship to fire its weapons as well as to help counter the recoil effects (the transmission beam will generate recoil of course as well.) - the probelm is coordinating this, especially with a larrge number of "gunships".

IIRC, Corellian and Warrior Gunships are primarily antistarfighter platforms, and not really designed for tackling fellow capships.NRS Guardian wrote:True, however ships like the Corellian Gunship and Warrior Gunship sacrifice range, crew comfort, and multi-role capability to pack as much firepower, speed, and manueverability into a 100-200 meter ship as possible. The Corellian Gunship is described as being capable of taking on ships several times its size, and the Warrior is specifically designed to destroy ISDs and other large ships in hit-and-run attacks (according to the extremely NR-biased Cracken's Threat Dossier).gladius wrote:IIRC, Corellian and Warrior Gunships are primarily antistarfighter platforms, and not really designed for tackling fellow capships.NRS Guardian wrote:True, however ships like the Corellian Gunship and Warrior Gunship sacrifice range, crew comfort, and multi-role capability to pack as much firepower, speed, and manueverability into a 100-200 meter ship as possible. Although both are fast and maneuverable for SW capital ships, I really don't think they're Defiant or White Star analogues. I really can't see them dodging fire from other capital ships. The gap between starfighters and capships in SW is filled with things like the Skipray blastboat, militarized shuttles, and highly armed and modified light freightors like the Falcon. They're a lot smaller, because SW capships don't have trouble hitting other capships.

both gunships carry extensive missile loads designed to give them much greater offensive punch against smaller warships like ISDs (escorts, bsically) In greater numbers they presumably can threaten larger ships.gladius wrote:IIRC, Corellian and Warrior Gunships are primarily antistarfighter platforms, and not really designed for tackling fellow capships.NRS Guardian wrote:True, however ships like the Corellian Gunship and Warrior Gunship sacrifice range, crew comfort, and multi-role capability to pack as much firepower, speed, and manueverability into a 100-200 meter ship as possible. (I suppose they're an analogue to torpedo-equipped "destroyers" or torpedo boats.)(

They're probably MORE agile relative to a bigger ship, but the need to pack any sort of real firepower *probably* owuld be something of a detriment to full mobility compared to a gunship NOT specificall designed to take on much larger ships (mainly because of fuel-mass requirements or missile-mass requirements.)Jim Raynor wrote: Although both are fast and maneuverable for SW capital ships, I really don't think they're Defiant or White Star analogues. In terms of actual power output, probably the closet SW match to the Defiant would be a Tie fighter, or at most a Y-Wing. Serving the same niche as the Defiant would be virtually any SW military ship, as unlike the Federation, most military vessels in the SW galaxy are optimized for combat operations. As a result, the Defiant's role as a pure combat vessel is somewhat superflous in the SW galaxy.
