Ultimate Spider-Man
Anyone else pick this game up today? I'd rave about it but I'm too busy playing it.
This game is the King Shit of Fuck Mountain. More thoughts later, too busy playing it. Glad I set this weekend aside for it.

I'm studying for the CPA exam. Have a nice summer, and if you're down just sit back and realize that Joe is off somewhere, doing much worse than you are.

I'm at Rhino right now. Its like they took everything that made Spiderman 2 special and removed it.
EDIT: Now I'm not saying its a terrible game, its just, damn half the fun of Spiderman 2 was webslinging. This new swinging system is awfuly basic and hard to handle.

That's what I thought at first...you really need to spend a good hour or two with it to get used to it. There's some new stuff you can do that you couldn't do in Spider-Man 2, though so far the biggest difference I've encountered is not being able to really run along the sides of buildings quite as effectively. Take advantage of the double jumping and the web climbing (press triangle while holding a web, it will take you higher.Anarchist Bunny wrote:I'm at Rhino right now. There is no way that this system could be a good as the pervious one, I fucking mastered that system and could pull off some very nice tricks with it.Joe wrote:That's what I thought at first...you really need to spend a good hour or two with it to get used to it. It matches the Green Goblin from the comic book, only he's not wearing the robes.
Have you read the Ultimate Spider-Man comic series? Perfect match.
And the dialog is way off. Norman Osborn does much more than just jump around screaming that he's going to destroy Peter. In fact, he viewed Peter as his own creation and tried to strongarm him into JOINING him, he didn't want to hurt him.
In USM, Norman mutates himself instead of just putting a mask on.

The Ultimate version of the Green Goblin is quite a bit different than the way he is portrayed in the regular Marvel universe. Norman Osborn was partially responsible for the accident that created Spider-Man, and in an attempt to recreate said accident, transformed himself into a literal goblin monster (whereas the original one merely dressed up as one). In his first appearances he was little more than a mute beast, although in later appearances he has evolved to the point where he can change back and forth from human to goblin at will. Spider-man has an increased healing factor, so does the goblin, the connection can be explained by they had both been subjected to the oz chemical, only in different ways.
It was later revealed in Ultimate Six that the oz chemical was created in hopes of recreating the super soldier formula that made Captain America. The creation of the Ultimate Marvel versions of Sandman and Electro are due to a rival company's attempt to recreate the super soldier formula.

Thats what I thought at the beginning, but once I got the hang of it...they're just different.Anarchist Bunny wrote: EDIT: Now I'm not saying its a terrible game, its just, damn half the fun of Spiderman 2 was webslinging. This new swinging system is awfuly basic and hard to handle.
The Spider-Man 2 webswinging system was much better suited for acrobatic stunts and mobility (getting from one place to another), however, the new system has more precision and is a lot better in the boss chases. Remember how Spider-Man 2 had very few chases, and the ones it did have were quite short? It was really hard to get where you wanted to go. USM's system is a lot more simple but also more precise when trying to go somewhere.
And I cannot stress how awesome Venom is to play. One of the coolest things that happened was Electro giving his annoying "BWAHAHA!" laugh, just as I swung a car around...
It went,
"Bwaha-" *CRUNCH* *fight ends, Electro falls on the floor in his underwear moaning*
Throwing Silver Sable into a moving taxi and seeing her get swept off the screen was amusing as well.

Yeah, it did seem off. Of course Norman isn't all there mentally, perhaps he regressed somehow. I guess it makes sense; they wanted to work the Goblin into the game but bringing Osborn into the plot would probably be too kitchen-sink.And the dialog is way off. Just woke up; I left off last night on the fight with Venom on the rooftop as he's trying to shove the helecopter off. I keep dying there.
That sorta-Carnage-fight was sweet.
How close am I to the end? Is that the final boss?
This is one of the few games where I actually look forward to the cutscenes.
EDIT: Is there any way to replay old bosses after you beat the game?

Disa-fucking-pointment. Yes Venom was fun to play as for a while, but all they did in this game was regress. About the only improvement was the cel shading and the panelling style made it feel more comicish. Everything else from the game is lesser to the previous one.
The combat system was boring and overly simplified(even though not all the moves you could buy in S2 were useful but they were fun to do). In US combat was just alternating punch and kick between enemies. The alternatives are minimal and not very effective. In Spiderman 2 you had a greater variety in the attacks and methods you could use to take out enemies.
The entire movement system blows in comparison to 2. Yeah the webswinging system is easier for beginners, but once I really got a hang of it is Spiderman 2 the chase missions were a breeze, not to mention it was easy as hell to move around the city vertically and horizontally, not being slowed down on rooftops with the run and jump charge, and god damn it it was just fun to do. In US moving around is just a chore.
The crime system (which I had heard was suppose to be improved on) was barely noticeable, hardly required, and has no fucking incentive other than moving the story along.
In S2 the banter was somewhat enjoyable, and sometimes amusing(Mysterio saying Klara Veratu Niktu, or "Problem with your laser Beck? I hear they have pills for that now". Now what we get is "Thanks but I had fireballs for lunch" repeated to the point that you just let Goblin smash him up a bit out of spite.
Now despite all that, its not a bad game, and had it come out after the first Spiderman game it would of been a fantastic step foward, but with Spiderman 2 all it is is a step back. Hopefully the Spiderman 3 movie game will improve on 2.
