Try using a different player. Zoomplayer or Videolan have no problems with AVI.

What I'd love to see is an INTENDED Plague...that turned infected victims attackable to both sides, but had a longer incubation period. It'd be interesting to see whether the healthy players would set up actual quarantines, barricades, and the like. I know I'd be crouched in front of the gates of Ironforge with my rifle...it's MY city, dammit!

It's not a problem with AVI, it's a problem with the codec used in that particular AVI file.

If you download GSpot, you can determine what codec an AVI is using and download that codec so that that file (and all others which use that codec) will work properly.

Incidentally, in the next month or so, virologists and epidemiologists are going to start looking at a potential Avian Flu pandemic scenario using an MMORPG simulator. So really, this kind of thing is quite a good model for testing large population problems without killing actual humans, just sprites.

It's encoded with XviD. You can also use FFDShow, which can decode almost any DivX-derivative codec.
