For those of you who follow knights of the dinner table, I have to share this gaming event.
I've been running a D&D game on tuesday nights for a group I didn't really know. A friend of mine asked me to DM for them to get them out of the hack and slash and into roleplay.
The first session went okay, they got stuff done, and quest started. The second session however ended in disaster. Not for the characters, but the players. One of the players objected to anouthers characters race of choice. He decided that since her character wasn't a humanoid I was showing her favortism. Now may I add that only one player had a standard character race and it wasn't him.
Anyway after the party got the objective of their quest (using her characters special abilities to succeed) he grabs her throws her in a sack and beats her to death before commiting hari kari. Now normally I don't care if the party kills each other as long as in in character. But in this case he was a chaotic good ranger. After he annouced this I of course had to ask what led to this show of cockmongery (not exact words) He said basically the above argument that I was showing her favoritism by letting her play a non-humanoid race and because a magic attack from the not so big bad hit everyone but her.
The attack missed her because it was a ground level (5ft tall) effect and she was flying 6ft in the air.
He also complained her character was usless in combat. This was mostly true. Having a +4 level adjustment ment she had to wait to get a character class. Until then she is limited to a few illusion special abilities, speed and stealth. And she's the party's main social character.
Now character death is nothing new. I am a 'let the dice fall where they may' DM. But the shear fact he decided he was right and instead of talking to me or raising an objection, then pretty much hosed the rest of the players in the process led me to declare him "Evil Stevil"
She left the room in a rage and I pretty much did to. Whether or not the game continues depends on what happens when we talk later this week. I get the feeling from what he said that he has no idea why we were pissed at him so even if it does it's going to take a long drawn out talk first.
