Whatever happend to Pokemon?
Frankly, Pokemon is dead. Even the new movie echoes it: Pokemon 4ever. Sheesh. Gimme a break. We all know why Pokemon wore out: it was a fad desinged to make the most money out of the least product.
All the kids that 'worshipped' Pokemon grew into sullen teens who have no use for Pikachu except as a gun target. But what do the members of this board have to say about the decline of Pokemon. Here's my opinion:
Who f****** cares? I'm glad it's dead. The time the kids wasted on Pokemon could have been spent learning the ways of Swvs ST from their parents and brothers. Our numbers could have increased tenfold until the world brimmed with geeks! What say you?

Oh, and pokemon is just a bastardization of digimon, and not worthy of my respect.

The fan base grew up. Seriously.
Pokemon attracted a very narrow age band for the most part. The justified Stigma that came with liking it prevented the attraction of more fans, both younger and older. It also resulted in most ignoring it after a few years because they wanted to fit in. The result is it died.

But then again, it could have been in Japan earlier than pokemon.
Since both of them, all anime seems to be copying them.

Pokemon wouldn't of had evolving if it wasn't for Digimon.
What I think really killed it was that Gold/Silver/Crystal was just about the same FUCKING game except you start with two new Pokemon, and a lot of the good pokemon were ruined.

Actaully, it was a good idea for 4 months then it got blown way out of proportion, and got fucked up.verilon wrote:Actually, the Digimon handheld thingies were out waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay before Pokemon ever was.Lord Sauron-Tyranus-Vader wrote:As I remeber correctly, Pokemon came out first.verilon wrote:data_link: When did Digimon come out compared to Pokemon? Nintendo REALLY should have made a 3d version of the Pokemon game on Gameboy for Nintendo64 instead of releasing 16.7 million shades of the same damn game.
That would have kept it going for a bit longer.
Oh well, fuck you Ash, you'll never amount to anything. Your pikachu is a damn cheater and you know it.

mainly Nintendo got a bad rep as being a Kiddie company because of Pokemon. Thats why there wasn't a Cube game planned and the GBA game was scrapped. Which is good because i see the GBA a way to relive the classics. I just bought the Phantasy Star collection for my GBA tonight. It has Phantasy Star I, II , and III on one cart.
Born of different worlds, woven together by fate, each shall rise to face their destiny- Grandia II, one of many reasons to be a Dreamcaster

Exactly. There is still a large fanbase to it, and the series has at least one season left to it.
Funny thing is, Pokemon has a large female fanbase aged 16-36. That's one of the reasons I don't pay as much attention to the female members here and at Spacebattles. I spend time at at least one board where the male-female ratio is sometimes 4-5.

As well as the first anime. At least, according to the author of the Big Eyes Small Mouth RPG supplement "Cute and Fuzzy Seizure Monsters"verilon wrote:data_link: When did Digimon come out compared to Pokemon? Scrapped? So then it didn't just come out in Japan last week?Moonshadow wrote:mainly Nintendo got a bad rep as being a Kiddie company because of Pokemon. Thats why there wasn't a Cube game planned and the GBA game was scrapped.
And the kiddie rep was based more on the innumerable number of Donkey Kong clones released by Rare and the blood edited out of the Nintendo system Mortal Kombats.[/url]

Well, a lot of the hype was directly tied into the card game. Not only has Yugioh tackled the Kid's CCG market recently, something which the Digimon game never managed to even approach, but the big flaw was that they only had 251 characters to make cards out of, so they kept releasing new versions. Who, really, cares about a game with Ash's Charizard, three regular Charizards, Blaine's Charizard, Lance's Charizard, Light Charizard, Dark Charizard, and Evil Charizard, when there isn't even any real story connecting it.
The very least they could have done for the card game was to give it some sort of unique storyline, such as the Pokemon Adventures Manga had.

A few reasons, actually. In no particular order:
#1 -- I happen to have a real soft spot for cuteness. Kids, animals, whatever.
#2 -- The Pokemon world is very different than ours, despite a few external simularities. Case in point, you won't see many 10-year-olds travelling the world with only a few pets and their friends to keep them company. Ash has so far all but grown up on the road. That's just one of the few differences and oddities about the world, in both the anime and the game. And I like trying to figure them out sometimes.
#3 -- The story is actually a little deeper than you think. Case in Point: Since the beginning of the story, Prof. Oak has always stuck close to Ash, and suppourted him closely. Sometimes, he even seems to favor Ash over his own grandson Gary! That, coupled with his close friendship with Ash's mother, has caused many to speculate that maybe there was something going on between the professor and Mrs. Ketchum. It was later revealed in Movie 4 that the Professor actually idolized Ash while he grew up, after an encounter with Celebi 40 years ago brought him into the present(Oak's future), and he met Ash.

And I for one am glad pokemon died. It was a stupid fad with nothing of substance behind it. It was an empty hollow phenomenon and died as soon as the 8 years old lost interest.
Confessional
I like Pokemon.
There, I said it.
Not that pathetic excuse of an animated series, though. I've been a fan of the game ever since it was just some quirky Gameboy RPG whose licensed show in Japan caused epileptics to have fits. Frankly, I've always felt the game isn't really appropriate for children, thanks to the complexity that seems to go over their heads. Older fans, for the most part, are the ones who can appreciate STAB or IVs; younger fans will load their Charizard with four different Fire attacks, and wonder why they keep getting 'pwned'.
FYI to those who think Pokemon is 'dead', though: Ruby/Sapphire, the latest installment in the series for Gameboy Advance, sold two million copies in two days in Japan.
