The MP40's accuracy at range sucks, but I've found the thompson to be pretty good at it, for an SMG.Dark Hellion wrote:Comments from someone who never played the original (blasphemy I know)
The classes are rather well balanced as of what I have seen. It is rather annoying when half your team is sniper/Mgun, but you can easily limit that, which combined with FF can really make it so only good people play as those classes.
The Mp40 and Thompson have a spray and pray feel, but this is mostly enables by the map design, because if the enemy is more than like 10 feet from you, they are hard to hit unless you get to set up crouches/prone and aim carefully. With so many grenades, MGs and snipers, this is very hard to do within the range that you can reliably hit.

You have to actually physically disconnect your ethernet cable, as the software assumes that you're trying to pirate it.Ace Pace wrote:Bystander, since you know this stuff, offline mode still dosn't work for me, how do I enable it? You are worried that several decades down the road steam won't exist and you won't be able to play? That's a rather interesting concern, but one that we would hope is dealt with before the end.Graeme Dice wrote:Then it's an awfulyl bleak future once Valve (or the company who buys their assets) decides that the aren'y going to bother doing activations of Half-Life anymore.InnocentBystander wrote:Yell all you like at steam, it's means that more of the buyers money goes to support the game makers, rather than the publisher, and I for one totally support it. Fortunately, Valve has big piles of money thanks to steam (yay massive profits thanks to steam!), so I don't see them going anywhere anytime soon.
Pretty soon you can buy a physical copy of dod:s, cs:s and hl2dm for $40 at a store.. perfect for people like me who have little interest playing hl2 but want to play the modsAlyeska wrote:I bought the DVD version of Half-Life 2. So I have to spend more money to buy something where I already have half the mods to begin with and the silver Steam version (cheaper then the physical copy I bought) has all these mods for free? Fuck that.mizuno wrote:Pretty soon you can buy a physical copy of dod:s, cs:s and hl2dm for $40 at a store.. perfect for people like me who have little interest playing hl2 but want to play the modsAlyeska wrote:I bought the DVD version of Half-Life 2. Have you ever considered getting a debit card? They work just as well for placing orders online. Plus, I just checked Steam (I got the retail HL2 myself), and you can order Day of Defeat separately for $20.
And how are DOD and CS:S mods any more? It's not like CS even uses the same interface elements as HL any more, and I would presume it's the same in DOD. I think by now they would qualify as complete games in their own right; just about the only elements they share in common with HL2 anymore are the engine.

Why the fuck would I want to pay $20 for DOD Source? I payed more money then the Silver package because I wanted a physical copy of the game and I can't even get the same stuff. No online only game is worth that much money. The DVD version of HL2 should have come bare minimum with just as much as the Silver Steam edition. I didn't pay $90 just for a fucking T-Shirt and a case for the game.Uraniun235 wrote:Have you ever considered getting a debit card? They work just as well for placing orders online. You might acutally take this as a learning experience and follow Uraniun's advice and get a debit card; shit most checking accounts come with one. Maybe you did get boned because you don't have a debit card? Perhaps it's time to get one? It's not a massive lifestyle change, unless keeping your cash under your matress is an important part of it...

Wow, I'm sorry, I'm getting way off topic.
I will discuss DoD:S, I will discuss DoD:S.....
DoD:S is a damn fine game, it's balance is uncanny, all the weapons masterfully done, it is simply great. The guns of both sides are similar, yet all are definatly different, and each plays it's own role. Rifles are high powered long range weapons, but take a lot more skill and finesse to use in close quarters. SMGs are wicked in tight spaces, but are nigh worthless beyond a certain distance. Assault rifles are powerful weapons with a lot of kickback, but can be used both as good close and distance fighting, when in prone they can even fill the role of a MG, though not nearly as well. MGs are disgustingly wonderful, but not nearly as invulnerable, and the bazooka class is fun and sorta unique, it's got a carbine or luger smg attached for added niftyness. The grenades are different, but the same, and the new rifle grenades are just plain delicious.
I just love this mod, even if I've got to squint to play it.

You know, the old games are good, but at the end of the day, the new ones are just better. They're modern, refined, crisp, good. The old games are just that, old. The HL engine is based on the fuckin Quake engine, it's a dinosaur. It's great that after all these years the games are still great, but when something newer, and better comes out, take advantage.Uraniun235 wrote:Are DOD and CS:S mods any more? Nope. Even the $100+ version of the game released with a special collectors tin and more extras only rates as a Bronze on Steam.InnocentBystander wrote:Uhm, wasn't the $90 box = Gold?

I ran the game on the 26th just to take a look at the HDR. Today I played it online for the first time, and I have to say it was good fun. Smoke grenades have no place in this game, though, and firing frag grenades from the rifles is just fucking stupid.
It doesn't play much differently from the original, otherwise.
Now Valve, if you could screw with the engine so it doesn't run like garbage on anything less than an XTPE, I'd be so happy.

I guess it doesn't help you now, but the gold package does come with the tin and all. There was also the option of buying silver, and backing up the gamefiles on a dvd, however not everyone has a dvd-burner, so that's not really a given.Alyeska wrote:And what the fuck good would that do me? I suppose the only good it would do you is to provide an added level of convinence, let you purchase things online, make your life easier. It appears too late for DoD:S though, maybe eventually it'll appear in the bargain bin?
Back to the subject at hand...
I feel just the opposite. Smokes give you the ability to get places, even if the enemy has crazy amounts of defense in the area. Proper use of these things can really speed things up, chokepoints of death are far easier to break, so you can acutally have a victory more often than not. Maybe it's different on smaller servers, but on the big ones, you can play avalanche for hours without anyone winning (easier for the axis to defend, truth be told).Hamel wrote: Smoke grenades have no place in this game, though, and firing frag grenades from the rifles is just fucking stupid.
I personally love the rifle grenades, they give you a lot more distance, and can be fired pretty much instantly. They did exist back in the day, they serve to enchance the rifleman class, I think they are a worthwile addition, I might even suggest giving them a 3rd, but that's no so important.

That's exactly how I feel. I don't have a credit card, I bought the big arse box of HL2 off the retail shelf and got CS:S - which, I have NEVER played, but would have happily swapped it for DOD:S.Alyeska wrote:

And again, the dial-up. Oh, god, the dial-up.

Smoke grenades can be quite useful if someone has machine gunners covering a corner. They can't shoot what they can't see, after all. It's especially nice if you land it near their feet and then set up your own machine guns, which proceed to fire into the smoke and kill them

I got a dvd burner a few weeks ago, and just recently backed up dod:S for Hotfoot on my older computer, it took almost an hour and package it up and was like 2 gigs. That option, while available, is far more time consuming that I would have believed. Still, it is a hard copy.Sharp-kun wrote:You could have used Steams backup option and burned the games to disc?Alyeska wrote:And what the fuck good would that do me?
Now if you have boardband, Steam is pretty nice. I recently reformatted my old pc with an image of my school laptop, downloaded steam, turned it on before I went to bed, in the morning it was all loaded. It was quite nice!
You really need a good config to play dod:s at a decent performance if your computer is like my laptop.. 1.4GHz PentiumM, 512 megs of ram, 32 meg geforce4 420 go and I can get 50-80 fps. Of course it looks nowhere near as good as the screenshots in the pc magazines but those with crappy computers can't be pickyHamel wrote:Now Valve, if you could screw with the engine so it doesn't run like garbage on anything less than an XTPE, I'd be so happy.
Oh yes, burn the game to 5 CDRs (something that isn't going to last as long as comercial DVDs). I do not have a DVD burner. I wanted a physical copy of the game with proper packaging. That means DVD art on the disc and jewlcase.Sharp-kun wrote:You could have used Steams backup option and burned the games to disc?Alyeska wrote:And what the fuck good would that do me?

This reminds me of this cake I wanted to have after I ate it.
Seriously, it's not Valve's fault that you wanted to pay Vivendi for the privilege of having a manufactured DVD in a shiny case, and I don't see what's so godawful about them wanting to avoid the hassle and expense of getting a game onto store shelves. It may not be convenient for dial-up users and a few dedicated hold-outs, but it sure as hell is convenient for Valve and many of it's users.

Don't you have to activate Steam over the Internet at least once, even with the boxed version? I'm pretty sure no matter which way you go, you're beholden to the mercy of Valve's servers.(something that isn't going to last as long as comercial DVDs)
