Can't get on net need help.

Ok here's the problem: we had to buy a new router for our student house because the last one died. We plug everything in as usual, WAN light is lit up, network seems to work fine and everything... but I cannot surf the net.

But the thing is that I can connect AND download from Kazza so the connection to the net [as the router diagnostic confirms] is working fine, its just that I can go on any websites. And MSN doesn't work.

Have tried all the usual small things that I can think of [reinstalling network card, messing with network/router settings, spy/virus check, XP roll-back to days when we had the old router etc.] but to no avail. When I open IE/Firefox it never loads any page or gets any data. On I.E. in the bottom left it says 'trying to connect to 1.0.0.0'.

I don't think it is the router because one of my housemates got the net working fine last night [which I think I may have messed up for him because after messing last night he cannot get online now either] so does anybody have any ideas? I'm getting tired of having to come to uni to go online!

Need some more info.

First of start a command prompt.

Click Start->Run-> then type "cmd.exe" and press enter

at the command prompt type.

"ping 127.0.0.1" and post the result.

"ipconfig /all" and post the result.

"nslookup www.cnn.com" and post the result.

That's going to be very difficult because I am at Uni atm - this is the only place I can go online.

Glocksman - Well there are only two on atm [mine and Tim's]. Tim's worked last night but, magically, it doesn't this morning. Probably something to do with me messing with router/net settings last night.

I'm sorry that I cannot provide more info and also the computers close in 30 mins so any quicks tips would be much appreciated.

The first thing I'd do is hit the 'restore factory defaults' button in the router's configuration page then redo the WAN setup.
Then if your bud's computer can get back on, we can work on your machine.

OK, last night I had an other fiddle and I think I now know the source of the problem - DNS. I can access google if I type in its IP address, but as soon as an actual name is typed in/clicked on [e.g. google.com] nothing works.

Anyone have any suggestions? I am using BT Broadband. Also, what is the IP of this forum so I will be able to access it from home later?

If yur current client does not have any restrictions, open up cmd and type "nslookup bbs.stardestroyer.net".

The first test is just for checking that IP works.

the second gives all information about the IP settings

And the third tests DNS

What concerns me is "Automatic Tunneling Pseudo-Interface" what the fuck is that?

Try disabling those interfaces.

Do not toutch the "Realtek RTL8139"

Ok I tried what you said. There was nothing that correlated to what was mentioned in the cmd list - 1394 connection was the only thing other than the local area connection listed, and I disabled that to no avail.

Any other ideas?

It's part of MS's IPv6 implementation.
This is beyond my limited knowledge, but perhaps you can find some useful advice in this TechNet article on manually configuring IPv6.

The strange thing is that my machine doesn't have any IPv6 components listed in ipconfig, and it's fully up to date with patches and updates.

My guess is the IPv6 probably came from that Kazaa shit.
Can you tell I don't like Virus & Trojan Magn....er Kazaa?

Anyway as a last resort, uninstall it and hope that the uninstaller is polite enough to put things back the way they were prior to the install.

I removed IP6 and restarted and it now works! You are a fucking hero Glocky [and Faram] and I can't thank you both enough!

Man, this has been such a shitty week but this is the pick-me-up that I needed. Excellent.
