The Drej Mothership

Post by Gil Hamilton »

This is sort of meant to address the Drej mothership listing on Mike's planetkiller page, specifically the part where he points out the contradiction in appearant size of the Drej mothership in different scenes.
I've got an idea that may explain the huge discrepancy of scale (besides the obvious answer of artistic liscense: the ship was shown to be that big to make it visually appealing to the audience).
Here is my theory.
The Drej are energy beings. From all appearances, their vessels seem to be the same: energy "solidified". We can see the Drej themselves being absorbed into the ship and popping out of the floor and such. I figure this is actual absorbtion, they are becoming part of the ship itself and then re-emerging somewhere else. This seems to be true of their fighters as well. When the fighter carrying Cale to the mothership drops him off, it absorbs into the floor, leaving him resting on it. I see the mothership being the same.
Now, if the ship itself is constructed out of energy "solidified", what happens when you add energy to it? It may become bigger. This is what I figure. When it attacked Earth, the Drej had charged up their ship to contain all the energy necessary to frag the planet. It was literally bloated with power. Now, you'd think that the ship would shrink as it discharged. But I figure that all the "solid energy" that was discharged came from inside the mass so it didn't change size. Besides, we didn't see the mothership for long enough to watch it deflate.
Plus, they may not carry all the energy necessary to frag a planet all the time, they only bulk up when they are about to blow up a planet. That's why it's so small every other time, it's only charged for day to day use.

What do you all think?

I think that it is a good explaination as any, I certainly don't see any flaws in the hypothosis! :P

Well, I admit I have some problems with it myself. For instance, if the Drej could just reabsorb themselves into the ship, why bother have that big open amplitheatre where the Momma Drej appears and corridors? I think it may be an assembling area for Drej footsoldiers, possibly the footsoldiers are generated as needed like their fighters are and don't have any real intelligence until they are created. I'm not satisfied with that answer though...
Problem is that Titan AE is a fluff movie. It doesn't have well thought out and detailed creations because it doesn't have to to be entertaining.

I hate the damn Drej, they are so cheap looking. Sure, grea,t 3d graphics, whatever, but they look like cheap 1993 cg aliens from Canadian mathematics education shows.
Does anyone know what I'm talking about? I know I don't. Now back to the Vodka...

The Drej are energy beings. Thus they must possess coherence through certain stabilizing forces. Adding excess energy to their systems would overcome these stabilizing forces making them coherent and disperse them, thus making the Drej incoherent and effectively killing them.

Just my 2 cents.
Believe in the sign of Hentai.

Weren't the Drej defeated when they're energy was used to power the Titan? It's been a while since I've seen the movie.

Yeah, Cale used the Drej to power-up the Titan. BTW, the Drej mothership wasn't all "bloated" up in the final confrontation...

It wasn't bloated up because it wasn't firing a planet killing shot? It takes much less energy to destroy the Titan than it would Earth.
