I remember this thread. This whole idea comes from a different episode where the E-D hauls part of a Neutron star around using its tractor beam. Thus some Trekkie said "HEy, I know, why not just throw Pluto at the ISD!"

To be honest, I don't remember. It was on SB, and despite my efforts to get them to understand why that likely would not work, their numbers defeated me. I was only able to respond to a few posts out of their many, and they continuously used moronic points to claim victory by de-fault when I did not respond to their posts.

But still, with that kind of logic, what the hell's preventing the ISD from using the same tactic.

I swear, some people just don't think.

[sarcasm] Well, the Enterprise D has transporters. They could beam Pluto right next to the Star Destroyer, and then they could just nudge it to blow the thing up! [sarcasm off]

By their logic, the Star Destroyer should have been able to vaporize Pluto with a single LTL shot. Their logic is essentially this: We know that the Enterprise D can position objects using its tractor beam. Therefore, it should be able to move very large objects with its tractor beam.

By the same logic, since we know that Star Destroyers can vaporize rocks, they should be able to vaporize very large rocks.

The Trekkie who posted this clearly has no concept of limits. There are limits to both ships, the Star Destroyer's are just greater than those of the Enterprise.

Shrike seems like he tried it, first, but I think he MAY have been being sarcastic. I think if he was, then areoborg picked up on the idea and used it to his advantage.

BTW, is that the same adam warlock here? The one who was cheering the GCS on? I'll have to ask him about that. I MAY have just lost respect for him, but I want to ask him what the context of that was.

I think Shrike was being sarcastic. In any case, he was talking about throwing the ISD into Pluto, not the other way around, like Areoborg.

I would tend to agree with you. Could this even make Areoborg MORE of an idiot? If Shrike was being sarcastic, and then Areoborg decided that it was a good tactic and decided to defend his argument? LOL!

Speaking of Pluto, how much energy would it take to break it apart? It has an icy interior, and it's about a thousand kilometers in diameter.

Anyway, where does it say the E-D can fling Pluto into the ISD? In what episode did the E-D hurl a planet/comet at a high speed? If the E-D can do it, why not the ISD?

There was on in that they tried to move a moon falling out of orbit using a tractor beam and their warp field. The catch was that to do so required turning off the shields!

Dude, I don't know of a SINGLE person here who would support Areoborg on this. Not even DarkStar or Loser099 would go agree with this one. His scenario makes no sense, except in his little psycho world. If the E-D was allowed to do such a thing, clearly the ISD should be able to, and he is MAKING UP a new capability for a GCS. The Enterprise has never propelled an object anywhere near as massive as Pluto. It never happened, it was based on nothing, and it has no common sense attached to it, whatsoever. Areoborg is an idiot. He should be treated as an idiot. I simply could not believe what I was seeing when I read his posts.

I think "The borg can adapt to anything" is pretty stupid.

And all the other no-limit claims too (like perfect accuracy and laser innumity)

I've heard those, too. Yes, they are stupid. I just don't think they were worse than the one we were discussing.

Maybe not but they were the only ones I could think of that hadn't been mentioned

But what if what we hear is going on CLEARLY could not happen in real life, like the object that was described as being BOTH "light" and "ions" in the same episode? It cannot be made of both. Are we to decide that it is light, or ions? What of Voyager's crack in an event horizon?

I realize that sometimes we must accept that certain aspects of Science Fiction are completely fictitious, like FTL travel, but what happens when we know of something that clearly violates scientific sense and nomenclature?

Ugh. I hate the ones that claim that Warp speed is faster.

I once had a "debate" with a guy on another BBS, where I layed out, step by step the events in TPM that indicate that Darth Maul was hauling ass from Coruscant to Tatooine at a speed that would make Starfleet wet their pants...and you know what the guy replied with? He said that since no definite numbers were mentioned in dialogue in any SW film, it couldn't be proved. Evidently the concept of deductive reasoning was beyond his grasp.
