You're Blind to the truth. "Our eyes are not that good of a design." Ridiculous. Have humans not used the eyesight given to master the planet, fly to the moon and uncover the most magnificent laws of science? Rubbish observation

I would think this would be consider a both THE RED HERRING and Strawman attack.

This is about the "Evolution cannot explain the complexity of the human eye" agrument

He's saying because eyesight has served its purpose, it must be perfect. This is a false dilemma between perfection and utter shit: there's really no reason eyesight must be perfect in order to see, and, in fact, we don't see perfectly, as evidenced by my 1 cm-thick glasses lenses.
A Government founded upon justice, and recognizing the equal rights of all men; claiming higher authority for existence, or sanction for its laws, that nature, reason, and the regularly ascertained will of the people; steadily refusing to put its sword and purse in the service of any religious creed or family is a standing offense to most of the Governments of the world, and to some narrow and bigoted people among ourselves.

I'm not sure but if you want to attack it simply point out that we've also gone on to master the planet with sinuses that were originally designed for a four legged animal and therefore are very prone to filling with fluid and causing us no end of problems. The human body has similar issues with the spine and probably some other organs.

There's also the problem of defining what perfect is. This is kind of an extension of what Surlethe is saying, that because eyesight has served it's purpose that it must therefore be perfect.

But, for example, we can't see into the infrared part of the spectrum, thus our eyesite has a limitation. One could then argue that it is therefore imperfect, because if it has a limitation it obviously can't be perfect.

As for this whole perfect design nonsense, my knees would like me to stand up and say bullshit.

Don't forget that all human eyes have a blind spot and blood vessels OVER the retina. How the hell is it perfect to have blood vessels obscure the part of the eye that does seeing to begin with?

I'd call it "changing the subject" from "is the eye perfect" to "is the eye useful". Those are NOT the same topic.

Using the criteria of "perfect", I would consider the squid eye more perfect than the human eye. (The blood vessels go BEHIND the retina, where they belong!) Yet the squid obviously haven't conqured the planet.

Those baleful creatures are just waiting for us to slip up and then they shall take their rightful place.

Along with other organisms more perfect than us: what of bears? Those bastards get fat as hell and apparently don't suffer any ill health effects from it! Whereas we get heart disease and clogged arteries. They eat our garbage and our perfectly healthy. We eat Twinkies, Ho-hos, nachos, and beer and we die at 50 from a CT.

Or a tortoise. Look at those laid-back assholes. They live for a 150 years and what do they do? Eat, sleep, and fuck. Can you imagine 150 years devoted to that? Whereas we're stuck with hard work for the majority of our lives. Damn you, tortoises! :P
