If I was going to war, the Stormtroopers. If I was not at war, definantly a redshirt. Life just seems to be so much more peaceful in the Fedeation. ;)

Haven't we had something along these lines before, with the 501st being provided with the SW versions of their prop weapons and sent against the Feddies?
It's a strange world. Let's keep it that way.

Damn it, I missed the part about these being real life organizations.

OK, I'd still join the 501. They actually seem to have FUN :!:

The recent one? That was 501st vs a Romulan invasion army.

Any information on these Starfleet Do-Gooders? Google doesn't give me much info...

...eh, doesn't matter - I'd still go with the 501st. Same sort of mission, same sort of guidelines and setup, but better garb.
This has been another blunder by you friendly local idiot.

Both are decent organizations, but the 501st is more appealing to me.
I'd rather dress as a Snowtrooper than a Vulcan.
And the 501st seems to get a whole lot more publicity.

I too would rather join the 501st. I'd love a Ep3 Clonetrooper armour set, either with the blue in movie 501st paint job or the red one seen on the troops following Palpy.

Well, I'm a member of the 501st and my day job is to be a squad leader in the US Army Combat Engineers; I also have a modest collection of personally owned firearms. So if there were a force-on-force clash and for some reason I was caught in my PVC-plastic armor at the time, I'd have a distinct advantage over the rather pastoral-like Starfleet officers.

At that point, it becomes a numbers game, and my ability to shoot, move & reload vs. their ability to learn "tactics" amd "cover fire/flanking maneuver" within the initial 20 seconds of the engagement. And how quickly I can get my hands on a phaser. But I'm just one example.
Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."

In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!

If all you want to do is have some harmless, mindless fun, go H3RE INST3ADZ0RZ!!

Stormtroopers/Clonetroopers can be vicious in combat.

I would join the 501st, simply because the chances of wearing a helmet would be higher, thus I could hide my shameful geekiness from the world, then afterward put my suit away and nobody would be the wiser!

On the other hand, a suit of Stormtrooper armor costs about $5,000, whereas a set of SF pajamas or some velour isn't going to set me back so much...

Hmm.. personal dignity vs. petty cash. Decisions, decisions!

How about I just point and laugh at all the nerds? :P

And if they give to charity, I'll forgive them for being so nerdy. ;)

Even if only 1% of 501st members have actual military training like Coyote, that's 1% more people in the 501st who understand military tactics than we would have in a group of Starfleet redshirts.

According to the numbers recently published in Star Wars Insider, one clonetrooper could defeat a large percentage of Starfleet itself in person-to-person combat (assuming Starfleet personel are equivilent to a battle droid).

So guess who has the better training? :P

That's assuming none of these redshirts understand military tactics or have actual military training. ;)

Well, that's assuming that these real-lifers imitate those we've seen entirely...

Which makes me wonder just how big the security department of Trek is, which may or may alter the relevance of the "redshirt" joke...

(Darth Wong, this isn't trying to be equivocating, but I've speculated that "the redshirt effect" might actually be from minimalism.)

The question of this thread seems to be, what would happen if both 501st and Starfleet, the real life organizations, were pitted against each other in a brawl.

It's not like all Star Trek fans are pimply basement loving children. There's Starfleet Marine Corps, and right on their opening statement there's a suggestion that some members have a military background, so there goes the 1% kickass theory. I see no reason why the distribution of people with actual military experience in the 501st or Starfleet should deviate from each other.

If suddenly weapons and armor turned real and Starfleet were put beside 501st... this is a stupid versus. Both sides are real human beings with real motivations, and therefore would probably not resort to killing each other at once. If you really want to do this, which is really stupid, 501st has 2500+ members according to their website and Starfleet has 4500+ members according to their website. I bet a lot of these guys are wearing TOS and ENT uniforms, meaning no nerfed TNG+ phasers. As for ergonomics, whoopie, how does a Star Wars fan operate the GUI in a stormtrooper's helmet? Remember how Luke couldn't see shit because he didn't know how to use the stormtrooper helmet? If worse comes to worse they could take them off I suppose, but this is really stupid.

What a stupid versus. Both groups are run by adults (I couldn't find any age limitation) so, they won't start shooting each other just because their equipment turns real.

LOL -- point, and I saw the Starfleet Marine Corps yesterday. While I think it's a bit much, thanks for that injection of a tad bit of sensibility.

Note to self: Resist the 'read the VS board' urge better/more often.
