I remember the Babylon 5 modification starting out very, very slow. As in taking hundreds of turns to get to the point where you could build ships to the scale in the B5 show. Colonization was also very, very slow with facilities on your homeworld being crucial and unreplicatable. If someone captured a homeworld, he had an immediate huge advantage.

For Star Trek look at here, total conversion modification with many races already set up and a unique tech tree. The ship sets are rather good too.

<edit>Oh shit, how many people have SE:IV and how many have SE:IV Gold, some mods won't work for both, in fact I'm pretty sure they don't and we can't even play games if we have different versions.</edit>

Yeah it was awesome, I only played it once as the Borg. After a few dozen turns, the Klingons came in and kicked my ass lol.

I wonder where the SW mod is, I'm not sure if there's anybody in the community making one. I remember a defunct one though. ST mod is pretty good because the last update was this September.

I've got SEIV Gold but I'm not sure how well it'll work with XPSP2.

As for mods, I'm fine playing vanilla SEIV, but if you guys want to do something I won't mind. I'm in it for the fun :)

I'm in it for the fun too, but fun and win aren't opposite extremes. When I play for fun I also play to win (in any game). If we play SE:IV stock, I will unfortunately have to excuse myself, because it won't be fun for me, and I'm not trying to sound self-conceited but it won't be fun for you guys either when I or the more experienced players are winning badly, or a lot of people have to team up to beat me or the more experienced players like Nephtys and Hotfoot it looks like. Stock is really, very limited, if you read my link you'll figure out how to master stock with a little practise, although the finer points need some PBW experience...

...which is why I suggest, strongly, a mod :-). Hopefully dont' start until Tuesday, I'm busy studying today, tomorrow and Monday, it'll give some more people time to notice the thread and post suggestions for a mod.

I suggest, to keep the beginning of the game going fast, 24 hour turns for the first 2 weeks. Then, after that, 36 hour turns. Two weeks after that, 72 hour turns. Turns begin taking longer and longer, and the beginning is rather short, so 24 hour turns for two weeks is not that bad.

When the game starts taking 30 minutes per turn, 72 hour turns will be great. All this can be done through PBW.

We can also start up an IC thread to roleplay, if there's enough interest.

I've got SE:IV Gold too, not sure how it'll work with Windows 2000.

Oh it'll work. I have SEIVG and used to run it on Win2k Pro. Dunno about the other Win2k but I don't think anyone runs anything but Pro anyway. It also runs on XP Pro too.

Let's not play stock. 80 percent of the technologies are utterly useless. None of us have 'hard' experience in ST, so I think that'll be a good way to go.

Star Trek mod sounds great to me. I only fooled around with it a little bit, but I found it to be excellent.

Excellent. I suggest people try it first, make sure everybody can get it working. The image modification is 40 megs and the mod itself (goto download) is 29 megs, I don't know how many are on 56k but downloading overnight should work. If a lot of people can't get it working maybe we choose a different one, or if some people don't like it for some reason.

I have a thin and slim notebook with no CD drive, so I'll have to network to install SE:IV Gold again.

Got it working, played for a couple hours this morning, and remembered why I didn't play it single player. Every (short) game follows the same pattern. Start colonizing and building up tech, perhaps even explore one or two systems and maybe even land a colony ship somewhere, then unstoppable space monsters show up and destroy all ships, glass all colonized planets. You retreat back into homeworlds, hold monsters at bay with mines and weapon platforms, eventually monsters show up with absurd numbers or the doomsday machine and glass homeworlds, you lose. Every single time. Even if you don't start anywhere near them, they get warp openers so quickly that they might as well have started in the system adjacent to you. Not that this matters for multiplayer, but it really ruins the singleplayer for the mod.

Yeah, we won't be having space monsters if we do choose this one.

You can cut the monsters out of single player just like multiplayer. Just deselect "create randomly generated computer empires" and deselect "create randomly generated neutral empires" and put in the empires manually.

I'm not sure whether space monsters are neutral or count as an empire. If worst comes to worst whoever is generating the game can just move the empire files of the space monsters out of there so they don't get generated.

Lookie, lookie, it's a thread highjack! Not that I mind, my question has been answered and I'll be eagerly waiting for Space Empires V to come out.
