I didn't even like the original Warcraft, never mind World of Warcraft.

I wouldnt know. If those cheap bastards would have bothered to include a free trial, then I would have tried it out. Since that wasn't possible, I had to base my opinion on hearsay on other MMORPG game forums. Being an Eve Online player and regulary checking out their forum, that opinion has not become... pretty

I do think WoW was a good thing for MMORPG games in general since it lowered the doorstep for a lot of people to join a MMORPG

There have been free trials available with several computer magazines that I've seen.

Hmm questing for xp? Check
Fighting small mammals and or humanoids for xp? Check
Multiple imbalance problems? Check

But then AO, AC, Shadowbane and more have all just been EQ remakes. WoW just trys to make the EQ experience more enjoyable and adding the litte touches. All MMO's still have the basic problem that they either suck, or are button clicking affairs where equipment, not skill make the greatest diffrence.

I am not a huge fan of it. My complaints are many and varied, however, it is easily the best traditional-style MMO to date.

I liked the entire series, but WoW isn't my thing. I don't get MMORPG's (well I understand why they're addictive, I just don't buy into their hype!)...
fun/fantasy movies existed before the overrated Star Wars came out. What made it seem 'less dark' was the sheer goofy aspect of it: two robots modeled on Laurel & Hardy, and a smartass outlaw with bigfoot co-pilot and their hotrod pizza-shaped ship, and they were sucked aboard a giant Disco Ball. -adw1

The fact that you are holding EQ in higher esteem than WoW shows issues right there :P. WoW can be played in EQ style if you want to turn it into your job not a game, but at the same time can be played as just a casual fun game.

Much agreement. More of a soul-destruction apparatus than a game. Not to mention that it stomps all over the atmosphere the original games established.

LordShaithis, this thread is just begging to be overlooked by most, since it's title doesn't bother to mention the subject matter...

If you have 30 minutes of free time, go to here and download episode 6, see what WoW can do to a innocent RTS or FPS player, much less a non-gamer who will have far less resistance to the evils of experience points and treasure hunting!

The original Warcraft games kicked fucking ass, I'm guessing those who hated Warcraft went the Command and Conquer/Starcraft route, or didn't like RTS at all.

I didn't like the clownish units and combat styles, so I went with C&C.

If you want a completely free alternative to MMORPGs for pretty much the exact same experience (only a lot less time-consuming), consider Progress Quest.

It was fun. For about 30 levels. Then it got incredibly dull, and I realised for each level beyond thirty you had to invest time and interest I didnt have any of.
EDIT: On the other hand, I greatly enjoyed Warcraft III, due to the tons of great custom maps out for it. The vanilla game was bland, but the ease of getting and playing so many kickass custom games made up for it. Sadly, bnet's community seemed to consist soley of assholes and 10 year old lunatics, but I did meet some really nice people, all told. Plus there was the fact it was about the only newer game I could play on my crappy college PC.

I tried warcraft and though the low levels are the fun ones, I couldn't give up dark age. I am glad I didn't switch over because, from what I hear from the many people who switched from WoW to DAoC, there is nothing whatsoever worth doing after capping level except going on thousands of raids in the hope of getting a full set of the best gear (and no word on what happens after that).

I am going to keep my RvR for a while I think

Not attacking you, but World of Warcraft is an entirely different genre from the rest of the Warcraft games.

Yeah, WoW is definitely not something you're gonna wanna play yet if you want to be really hardcore about it, because there was very little endgame or PvP content on release, and they can only make so much more in a given amount of time. PvP is where this game truely has the potential to shine, but it just doesn't seem to be developing fast enough. Every few patches there will be some new piece of endgame content. Things have actually been looking way better in that department lately. Zul'Gurub is new enough that it isn't routinely farmed yet, and Blackwing Lair is proving to be insanely difficult, from what I hear. I don't know if there's been more than a handful of kills of Nefarion yet. Two more raids coming up soon, which will bring a bunch of new lore, and can only be accessed by someone on the server figuring out how to open up the area. Of course, it won't be long before the secret is out, and all the servers open them up, but that will be a rare opportunity to do something unique in the game.

Blizzard can go hang. I can't think of a single game of theirs that I can feel good about, aside from Starcraft. And even that was over-rated compared to most of its contemporaries.

Diablo and the Warcraft spamming (how many games and expansions do you need) are just fucked.

Never tried it, but I hear it's upper - end content is lacking, and I'm all about the killing of other players, which they implemented poorly, which is why I play Dark Age of Camelot. The single best Realm vs Realm MMORPG out there.

Besides, WOW is too cartoonish for me, I prefer the gritty look of, oh, Dark Age of Camelot :P

DAOC has its problems like all MMORPGs, notably less the skill more the button pushing and lots of grinding for exp, but you have three realms at constant war with each other, and 45 classes.

WoW is probably the best MMO that I've seen. Though I'll be the first to admit that list is rather small.

That being said MMO's have a long way to come before they'll interest me again. Though, there is a game that is in development which mixes FPS and MMO style of gameplay. I'm very interested to see how that turns out.

One can only really spend one's time/money on one MMORPG at a time anyway I would think...

I love Warcraft, it's just the MMORPG model I'm not fond of. ;)

It's true when a game series branches out into a new genre, you lose something of the original (for example, if they made an RTS based on Doom, it wouldn't suck in all the people who liked the FPS Doom necessarily).

Each to his own!

I would consider playing Everworld of Nethack in Camelot where you are the '&' of doom. Just look out for the big 'L's.
