Help me boot my Windows XP disc! Please. (!boot, cd code 4)

Post by Medic »

Here's the entire situation. I got my nVidia 7800GTX OC and needed to upgrade the motherboard and power supply. Did that. The computer runs fine, obviously passing the smoke test but there is one last problem.

I got a burned version of Windows XP Home that I'm trying to boot from to re-install Windows XP. The exact wording of the error once the computer boots up is:
my computer wrote:Boot from CD/DVD:
Boot from CD/DVD:
1. FD 1.44 MB System Type - (13)
CDBOOT: Cannot boot from CD -- Code: 4
At this point I can't go forward and even get onto the CD and start the whole installation process.

I'm googling it as we speak but with little success. The guy who helped me put the whole rig together isn't familiar with it either but the BIOS is in fact looking to the CD first, so that isn't the problem.

I backed up what I wanted, onto a small memory stick and my MP3 player but other than that the only disc involved is the burned Windows disc. No floppy's either. Oh, and it's the same old HD, only new things are the video card, motherboard and power supply to power that beast of a GPU. If the best method is buying a new Windows disc I will but if I can save $200 I'd very much like to.

Any help appreciated.

edit: I do not know the SP or service pack on the old version, I only know that it was Windows XP Home.

edit 2: at this point, the first thing the computer asks for is a disc to boot from, so if you were wondering, no, I can't get into Windows XP anymore. What was on the HD is gone prolly cause of the new motherboard.

You could have asked about how to swap parts without a reinstall :P

A burned copy, eh? It sounds like you didn't burn the bootsector properly. There should be some tools on CD-ROM to build a set of boot floppies, though (you'll have to use another computer).

My computer is not floppy compatible either. Er, I'm sure it is but I got no floppy drives. :?

The individual CD I am using is it's own CD but what it was burned from has worked fine on other computer's so I'm hoping it's just this CD.

Looks like something from your BIOS, perhaps your computer manual has something associated with the code.
