It was supposed to be different, the insulting the intelligence of everyone in the theater was unintentional.

I have heard that, and how the SFX choice came down to either being able to do the suits *or* making the bugs look good, but not both. That doesn't excuse *gutting* the story when they made the movie. Things like, oh, Dizzy suddenly becoming a woman and dying towards the end rather than within the first 15 minutes like the book. Or how about the flogging: it made *no* sense in the movie, unlike the book.
