Dark Lord; Rise of Darth Vader (Spoilers)
I can't seem to find a review thread for this, has anyone else got it yet?
About half-way through, I'll probably be finished and post a review tomorrow...

Didn't know it was out.
Hopefully a decent book since this is supposed to be the first of the PT Vader work.

Well, half way through, and it is very engaging. I'm sure some won't like it because of 'whiny RotS vader' but this is because it does dwell on his perspective quite a bit. It does however, so far, drive a Star Destroyer over the idea that he's weaker because of his lost limbs.

Oh yes, it also has clone commandos defying Order Sixty-Six. It wasn't programmed in by the Kaminoans, it was some sort of standing order. The clones in question assumed it was the CIS hacking their comms and issuing false orders.
Vader gets sent to punish them.

Hmm. Well, we can finally close the book on the Order 66 debate...NecronLord wrote:Oh yes, it also has clone commandos defying Order Sixty-Six. This is correct. He has a modified Eta-2 in the book, though he has sent his order and designs for a custom fighter to SFS, they've yet to deliver it to the Star Destroyer Exactor. The Exactor, is, incidentally, the second Imperator class (it uses this name) to be built. Victories also get a good showing (humm, I wonder, should the Victory's class name actually be Victor? It fits the naming scheme better).VT-16 wrote:I heard Vader uses a black Eta-2 starfighter in this story, any other vehicle-trivia or action?
On the RotS Doomball: The scene at the end of RotS takes place no more than three weeks after the slaughter on Mustafar. The Doomball is not explicitly identified as the Death Star, but as a 'moonlet sized terror weapon' that Palpatine was having constructed. Vader's saber of the classic trilogy was built 'in its shadow' - Sidious supplied the crystal, and his own saber as a template, but Vader ended up making a black version of his old weapon anyway.
If we really want to jerk off, one could interpret this passage to mean that the Doomball reached that state of completion in the three weeks since the declaration of Empire, but that's not really supported.

To elaborate, Darth Sidious thinks that the only things his apprentice can't do because of his injuries are summon force lightning and jump about like he used to be able to. The rest is a confidence problem.NecronLord wrote:drive a Star Destroyer over the idea that he's weaker because of his lost limbs.

Good stuff, particularly the whole what's making him weaker is because more of asswhupping by Obi Wan then losing variety limps.
Sounds good, I'll have a look see sometime this weekend.

NEC says it is the result of the Victor project between Rendili and Kuat.NecronLord wrote:This is correct. Since it wasn't something pre-programed into them, how did the Jedi miss something like Order 66? Wouldn't they question a directive that basically says "Jedi r evilz, k1llz dem!"?NecronLord wrote:Oh yes, it also has clone commandos defying Order Sixty-Six. 'Ai! ai!' wailed Legolas. 'A Balrog! A Balrog is come!'
Gimli stared with wide eyes. 'Durin's Bane!' he cried, and letting his axe fall he covered his face.
'A Balrog,' muttered Gandalf. 'Now I understand.' He faltered and leaned heavily on his staff. 'What an evil fortune! And I am already weary.'

For all we know, Order 66 is 'your general is comprimised, terminate.' Perhaps the Jedi did know, Palpatine could easily use the preceedent of Jedi turning traitor or going insane during the war to say 'STFU' if Yoda or his ilk objected to it going in the standing orders manual.Balrog wrote:Since it wasn't something pre-programed into them, how did the Jedi miss something like Order 66? Possible, but unlikely. Dark Lord suggests that the identity of Darth Sidious is unknown outside his inner circle. It is, given the vestigial fuedalism that exists in Star Wars (Queen this, Princess that) possible that 'My Lord' is an acceptable form of address for the Chancellor.VT-16 wrote:Since the clones all referred to Palpatine as 'my Lord' it seems this was an order given to them in secret, under Palpatine's real identity.

I'm gonna be making the rounds through downtown Iowa City today, so if someone has it I might pick it up, since I've been looking forward to this book for a while.

But the implication is that Order 66 applied to any and all Jedi in the vicinity. While what you're saying is possible, I like to think that at least a few Jedi would think "WTF" at such a broad order. BTW, why is this spoilerized?NecronLord wrote:For all we know, Order 66 is 'your general is comprimised, terminate.' It's a thread about a book and it has "spoiler" in the title. Why are we doing tiny letters at all? Do you really think someone who is out to avoid spoilers is going to read this thread?
If Religion and Politics were characters on a soap opera, Religion would be the one that goes insane with jealousy over Politics' intimate relationship with Reality, and secretly murder Politics in the night, skin the corpse, and run around its apartment wearing the skin like a cape shouting "My votes now! All votes for me! Wheeee!" -- Lagmonster

Oh very well. Just because I like spoilerising things now and then.Darth Yoshi wrote:But the implication is that Order 66 applied to any and all Jedi in the vicinity. What would they say about it? If G.0.66 is 'kill the generals commanding you' then what grounds have they got for complaint? It has to be issued by the Supreme Chancellor. It can be brushed away with:
"Master Yoda, I'm not sure what you're saying. I would never issue any order against the interests of the Republic. While I'm certain that the majority of Jedi are noble guardians of justice, you cannot deny that some Jedi have committed war crimes.
"Order Sixty Six is simply there to make for a clear and unambiguous way to deal with those jedi who turn traitor. If you want to have it remove, I suggest improving the reliability of your jedi. One traitor per thousand is not a good rate of loyalty Master Yoda.."

I couldn't find it, either. According to Amazon, it doesn't come out for about a month.
