Atheist songs

Post by Metatwaddle »

I'm making a playlist of agnostic/atheist/that sort of song. So far I have "God" by Tori Amos, "Dear God" by XTC (which is the mother of all atheist songs), "Kyoto Now" by Bad Religion and "Imagine" by John Lennon. Does anyone have any suggestions of songs I can add?

Some of the opening movements to Mendelssohn's Elijah are related to how God abandoned the farmers, if that's what you mean.

'Muhammed My Friend' is about Jesus being a chick, so that one might count? And 'Personal Jesus' by Depeche Mode might also be in the spirit you're looking for...

Ooh, I forgot about Muhammad My Friend. Good idea! (I love Tori. Any excuse to put one of her songs on my playlist is good.)

Dalton - thanks :D

Gandalf - That is some funny shit! "This one goes out to all my homies working in the field of evolutionary science..."

"God Thinks" -Voltaire
"The rest of the poem plays upon that pun. On the contrary, says Catullus, although my verses are soft (molliculi ac parum pudici in line 8, reversing the play on words), they can arouse even limp old men. Should Furius and Aurelius have any remaining doubts about Catullus' virility, he offers to fuck them anally and orally to prove otherwise." - Catullus 16, Wikipedia

It might not be atheist exactly, but its definitly anti-religion:

Black Label Society's Counterfeit God

"We've washed your brain and cleansed your soul
Till Nothing's all you need to know"

That lyric makes me laugh everytime.

I can think of some religiously titled 1960's songs that might just qualify.

first up:

Plsam 23: Jetro Tull: Jesus saves, well he'd better save himself from bloody glory seakers who use his name to kill.

"I'm Falling in Winchester Cathedral all religious must have there day, more people have died in the name of christ then anything at all."- or at least that's what I recall the lyrics being.

First incarnation of Warpigs (calling preachers the real sinners)

Not a song, just a verse:

Gimme dat Old Time Religion,
Gimme dat Old Time Religion --

On second thought - don't

Does Billy Joel's Only the Good Die Young count?

I mentioned that one, just couldn't remember the name of the song

oh and I fucked up the jethro tull song:
hymn 43, Jethro Tull wrote:Hymn 43
Jethro Tull

Oh, father high in heaven
Smile down upon your son, yeah, hey
What's busy with his money games
Oh, there's women and there's guns
Ah, Jesus save me

And the unsung Western hero
Killed an Indian or three, yeah, hey
And made his name in Hollywood
Oh, to set the white man free
Oh, Jesus save me

If Jesus saves
Well, he'd better save himself
From the gory, glory seekers
Who use His name in death
Oooooooooh, Jesus save me

If Jesus saves
Well, he'd better save himself
From the gory, glory seekers
Who use His name in death
Oooooooooh, Jesus save me

Well, I saw him in the city
And on the mountains of the moon, yeah, hey
His cross was rather bloody
Oooh, he could hardly roll his stone
Oh, Jesus save me

Here are the lyrics to that one
Six o' clock
In the morning, I feel pretty good
So I dropped into the luxury of the Lords
Fighting dragons and crossing swords
With the people against the hordes
Who came to conquer.

Seven o'clock
In the morning, here it comes
I taste the warning and I am so amazed
I'm here today, seeing things so clear this way
In the car and on my way
To Stonehenge.

I'm flying in Winchester cathedral
Sunlight pouring through the break of day.
Stumbled through the door and into the chamber;
There's a lady setting flowers on a table covered lace
And a cleaner in the distance finds a cobweb on a face
And a feeling deep inside of me tells me
This can't be the place

I'm flying in Winchester cathedral.
All religion has to have its day
Expressions on the face of the Saviour
Made me say
I can't stay.

Open up the gates of the church and let me out of here!
Too many people have lied in the name of Christ
For anyone to heed the call.
So many people have died in the name of Christ
That I can't believe it all.

And now I'm standing on the grave of a soldier that died in 1799
And the day he died it was a birthday
And I noticed it was mine.
And my head didn't know just who I was
And I went spinning back in time.
And I am high upon the altar
High upon the altar, high.

I'm flying in Winchester cathedral,
It's hard enough to drink the wine.
The air inside just hangs in delusion,
But given time,
I'll be fine
