New Empire At War Trailer: make sure you're wearing dipers
Trailer
I want this game. The ground combat looks really cheesey and cumbersome, not to mention a bit 'WTF' tossed in there. Vader, on the ground leading stormtroopers against fortified Rebel positions? I'm not really excited about the ground combat, if you ask me, but the space combat looks amazing.

It looks like they got the AT-AT scaling right at least, although the idea of including ground "heroes" is a bit dubious.
But yes, the space combat looks quite good.
I'm getting it.

I want to be excited about this game. I really do. But I can't help but think that by trying to do two radically different things (space and ground combat) that they're being a little bit too ambitious. I have a feeling that they're both going to turn out mediocre or worse.
And then there's the fact that it's a Star Wars rts game. In the past, those haven't turned out so well.
Maybe I'm just being to cynical...

I would rather that this game be completely space combat and then expand on the campaign dynamics. LucasArts has tried the ground thing before and it has not been very....enthusiastically followed. Force Commander: meh. The Ages of Empire mod: gag me. Clone Wars, Ages of Empire mod 2: oh god. Come on! People care more about the space combat because it allows for more flexible situations and doesn't look so clunky.
Seriouslly, LucasArts is trying to please too many people with this game. For people who want a ground based game, go play your Ages of Empire mod. For people like myself who want naval combat, give us cake!

I don't think game developers realize that people actually care more about the campaign part of a RTS game than about the pretty pictures and battles (those are important...but after a while, it tends to take a second seat to the game play). Take Rome Total War, tactical battle is realtively the same since Mideval TW but it expanded on the campaign tremendously and that was really the winner for the game.

It doesn't look like the ground units can be placed into a default formation that games like AoE or R:TW would give us. I hated that in Force Commander and I may just as well hate it here.
The space combat might prove to be cool with all the firepower going around (it was lame in Rebellion) and I would definitely like to play a demo trying it out.
Other than that, I may just as well turn away from this game as I have with many others from Lucasfilms.

I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season."

Rebellion for life. No one can defeat my multi Death Star fleets of doom.InnocentBystander wrote:The game is *looking* good, don't get me wrong, but we've all seen star wars RTS games and well... it looks like limited 3d like with star trek armada/armada 2. nowhere near on the same scale as homeworld.Captain tycho wrote:Space combat looks cool. I hope its Homeworld-eqsque 3d instead of a bunch of ships on a 2d plane. The ground combat, however....*shudders*

Thats what it is, imagine Armada or... I can't actully think of another example, but it seems like Fighters are in squads, while singuler ships, watch the older trailers, aside from not really flashy graphics(watching a bombing run was torture) theres nothing there.

Yeah, Warlords is absolutely excellent. Too bad it runs like shit in even small capital ship engagements.Lord Pounder wrote:The ground combat looks very similar to an updated Force Comander, this doesn't bode well. If you really want a fleet battle set in the GFFA just get the SW mod for HW2, it's bound to be better given that it's solely a Space fleet RTS.

You can't have multiple death stars in a single sector, it creates gravitational unhappyness! Or at least that's what I rememberKrauserKrauser wrote:Rebellion for life. The guys who make it have very little regard for people with machines more than a year old. They acutally do things pretty poorly, 360 degree turrets everywhere, one for each gun. There are so many ways I can think of which would vastly improve the mod's gameplay and performance... *sigh*Captain tycho wrote:Yeah, Warlords is absolutely excellent.
