Question for the mech-heads around here

Post by Frank Hipper »

UPN here in Phoenix just aired The Iron Giant.
Cute film.
Bad-assed giant robot.
While not a piloted vehicle, how would you rate that thing?
It mopped the earth with M-48s, out-flew F-86s, and generated a hydrogen bomb scale blast that was green and lightning-y and uber-cool.
It was merely staggered by big naval guns. It ignored M-48 gunfire.
Would this be a threat to your favorites? I'm not hip to the genre and liked the flick, so thought I'd ask.

Sure, it was tough.
Sure, it had some mean-ass guns when it got all pissed.

But versus a trained Jade Falcon 'Mechwarrior in a Timberwolf? Dead 'bot, for the following reasons:
2 clan ER PPCs
4 clan MGs
2 clan ER small pulse lasers
2 clan LRM 20s
2 clan ER large pulse lasers

Will someone post the fall damage calcs here?

Of course, we're never told how many years the Iron Giant's creators have had.

Watches Timberwolf die under combined Inferno Sholder Mounted SRM fire. (OOOHHHH, so much heat, and even with Double Heat Sinks, your going into total shut down and figure the cost ratio on what I just mention.)

also, since the Iron Giant REBUILT itself after that Nuke blast.

Also, the basic Falling/Ramming Calcs show that that B-Tech mechs are really dead meat.

Bah, what kind of fool outfits their mech like that anyway?

Eh, resistance to fall damage != resistance to bullets and explosions. But I doubt a B-tech mech would win this one anyway, from the sound of things.

Bottom line is BT stuff is hard to calc, because you can get 3 or 4 different answers...

Iron giant, however, survied a nuke (which BT can't....)...I'd say that makes him a TAD bit more durable, no?

And Yosimite? Inferno's don't work that way: One adds 6 heat for 3 turns, each extra just adds to the number of turns it burns. Flamers, on the other hand, do add...

The Iron Giant would blow BT mech's limbs off and devour the remains, it's so rediculously overpowered.

That's the standard Clan Timberwolf configuration. And if you want a missle-boat, take a Mad Dog, not a Timberwolf.

Modern, early 50's, and high end WW2 gear. Btech is just pitiful.

Smoke Jaguar Timberwolf (or Mad Cat, for you Inner Sphere whores).

And how do you come to the conclusion that modern military equipment can out-perform this? Its got a power plant that will last far longer than any modern-day tank's (about 5,000 years, I believe), a top speed of 87 km/hour, optional jump jets that let it fly around, superior mobility provided by reverse-articulated legs, a direct neural interface with the pilot allowing for fast, effecient, and coordinated reactions, internal systems that jettison ammunition in danger of exploding, no flammable fuel, the ability to simply step on any intervening tanks or infantry, and most of its weapons will never run out of ammunition. I do not yet have any hard specs on its weapons or armor, but methinks even a 120mm cannon would do little more than chip off some paint and dent up the underlying armor.

We're going with reality.
You forgot to mention the fact that the longest reanged weapon in the game goes less than a kilometer, diregarding artillery, and the artillery tops out at 20 klicks. You also forget that they deliberately fucked the tanks after one of the guys they had working for them designed the Demolisher, which could rape almost any mech under the original rules.

There was also the 'Mech with two engines, which was a Medium equipped with long-range weaponry that could outrun scout 'Mechs. They changed the rules after that one too. Whenever something came along that could defeat a 'Mech, they just made it weaker.

I remember the First version of the Patton/Rommel class tanks.

Those were nice mech killers.

Still there's few things more scary to mechs then GEV's with lots of LRM's & Long Tom's backing them up, and then sending in little wheeled vehicles with TAG and NARC.
