Ha ha, got massive engine destroying weapons from my very first colony.
I'd probably be steamrolled right now if somebody competent who was rushing to space superiority happened upon my systems. Luckily, I don't think that'll happen any time soon.

It won't. For one thing, engines are still way too slow for anything that could be called rushing.

For you maybe. But PHEAR my engines! They're faster than the fastest fast-thing, more powerful than the power pegasus of persei, and more stylish than the style snake of slytheron!Trogdor wrote:It won't. For one thing, engines are still way too slow for anything that could be called rushing.
..or maybe they're speed 3 warp nacelles, but with quantum hyperbole generators.
Speed 4 warp nacelles, with Ferengi's propulsion expert speed 5, using emergency propulsion gives me 7 moves a turn, and I have two damage controls on each of my designs meaning the emergency propulsion gets repaired in one turn .
I'm about to "rush" a neutral in two turns (well three). I'll tell you how it goes . If they didn't put mines in orbit there's a good chance I'll get another homeworld soon.
<edit>Oh and Bolte don't worry about being attacked right now. I've gone researching purely combat technologies and ship hull sizes, and I'm nowhere near where I could feel comfortable building a fleet. If you've created a buffer you'll see a fleet coming for you a mile away, and you'll have weapons platforms, satellites and mines galore before a fleet enters. It's stupid to make a fleet before you get the light cruiser hull, there just isn't enough room on the hull to put everything you need to make your ship combat effective. Until light cruisers become the norm, satellites, mines and weapons platforms can hold their own, providing you're prepared and stacking satellites on a warp point, stacking mines (120 per sector)</edit>

<edit>Damn Federation still has the best research and score, guess Admiral Kirk really knows what the fuck he's doing. The Ferengi send their congratulations to Kirk *asskissing*. Also Rule of Acquisition of the day -- anything worth doing is worth doing for money.</edit>
<edit>If anybody's interested, we can set up pickup games on the weekends or something. 3-4 hours, small map, stock, we can co-ordinate on some kind of IM or MIRC, and maybe limit ourselves to 5 minutes for each turn, Age of Wonders style. The timing would be a bitch to set up which is why I've never done it with strangers before, but this is SD.net a small thing like timezones shouldn't stop us </edit>
<edit 2>Oh yeah 3-4 hours might be too long for people who don't game a lot, maybe 1 or 2 hours. We won't finish the game, but we can set up sort of a point scoring system, and whoever has the most points wins or something.</edit 2>

Not to worry, I'm confident that it will all come crashing down around my ears. I played a few singleplayer games with this mod before we started, so I know generally what strategies work, but I have precisely zero experience against other humans in SE4, and zero experience with what works in strategic battles (which can be quite different than tactical).brianeyci wrote:Damn Federation still has the best research and score, guess Admiral Kirk really knows what the fuck he's doing. I'm not worried, the Federation communist economy will crash soon enough . Fortunately, Ferengi are a little more pragmatic and deal with latinum.Arthur_Tuxedo wrote:Not to worry, I'm confident that it will all come crashing down around my ears. Okay, for strategic battles fleet formations are retarded. Make sure you click on every single strategy, especially the default "optimal firing range" one and select all the ticks for "ships that break formation". It isn't selected by default.
Also when designing ships, keep in mind impulse engines (you need them for combat moves), and also when different classes of ships are in the same fleet, the faster ships will move in front first and be pulverized, so you want all the ships to have the same kind of engines. Also when designing ships, put the weapons you want to fire first in the design queue. For example, my "Necrodome" ship would fire point defense weapons first, then phase cannons. Which is stupid. You should always add point defense weapons last, because when they fire they use up a multiplex tracking. Until you get multiplex tracking (2), you can only fire on one ship a turn. So if you fire on an incoming missile first, you won't be able to fire main ship weapons because you use it up. But if you put point defense weapons last like this,
they will still fire. This is kind of a bug I think. The order of weapons is important with things like shield depleters. You want your shield depleters to fire first, then your main weapons. Or tractor beams. Fire a tractor beam, fire all your weapons, then fire a repulsor or wormhole beam. Add the weapons in the order you want them to fire, and they'll fire in that order. Always add point-defense weapons last in your design.
And you will want your ships in fleets. Get fleet training and ship training facilities. Just make sure that your strategies tell your ships to break formation first. Untrained ships are cannon fodder. The good thing about fleets is the more ships you add to it, the fleet doesn't lose experience. So I keep like 10 units in separate fleets in orbit, that way if I need a fully trained fleet I bring untrained ships, add them to the fleet, and the fleet +20% bonus is already there. The ship bonus is a little harder to get but still worth it. If you have a sector with a moon and a planet, colonize both and build a fleet training and a ship training on each of them. Only one per planet works, but multiple in the same sector but on different planets also work.
If defending a wormhole, a circle formation is good. Wall formation is good for others. I don't know the other formations in this mod, not sure which ones are effective.
If you go missiles, use maximum firing range and make sure to get seeker speed 8 missiles, maybe even higher. You want to be able to take only one round of point defense shooting at your missiles. If I was going missile boat I wouldn't even bother with shields or armor, I would just load up on as many missiles as I could and try and swarm them. I would use shuttlecraft along with missiles.
