New Fusion Reactor Tech. Maybe...

OMG Slashdot!

http://focusfusion.org/

Seems Slashdot has their doubts about it, but if it works as advertised, we can say 'Go to Hell' to the oil industry. :D

*reads*
Apparently, they rely on the idea that 1 Boron-11 + 1 p = 3 He-4, with at least one He emitted as Alpha radiation they can simply collect to produce electricity, without even needing to convert heat.
Personally, I don't see why that should work; I'd rather expect the product to be 1 C-12 + Gamma. Lots of Gamma.

Also, the research plan looks curious - they claim they have already achieved the conditions necessary to fuse H-B fuel, but they haven't tried whether it'll actually work as expected, and apparently don't plan on putting any actual H-B fuel in before they have a reactor that can produce a net energy gain.
If I were running that project, I'd already have H-B fusion on the "done" list, with only "increase efficiency to net energy gain" and "scale up to useful size" left on the "to do" list.
Far better from a public relations point of view.

But what do I know - I could be wrong on both counts.
In fact, I kinda hope I'm wrong.
