X-Box vs. Dreamcast: Similarities and Differences.

Post by SirNitram »

A good article. Link

Entirely in pictures, so I won't quote.

I will, however, say that similarities 4, 9, and 21 are highly compelling. ;)

LOL...while some fun similarities, Microbeastie does at least have the fundage.

Yeah, the DC died because Sega was dead and buried because of the fiasco called Saturn, which was borne out of the fiasco called the Sega CD...but it was a good little trooper, and brought me more joy then the PS2 ever did at the time(Hells, I still use it more then the PS2 for gaming at times).

The real difference, I think, is that Microsoft is brilliant at marketing, while SEGA's efforts were pathetic. If Sony had put out the Dreamcast and SEGA had done the PS2, I'm confident that the results would have been reversed.

I did have a Dreamcast at one time and it was a damned good console. I think another reason it failed apart from poor marketing was that some people decided to wait and see what the PS2 was like.

Though Sega didn't exactly do themselves any favours with the Saturn either.

Segata Sanshiro is the very definition of "marketing brilliance", IMO.

Yeah, I have to agree. I liked the original Xbox controller a lot more than the tiny assed one they replaced it with.

Of course, the Controller S is practically the Second Coming compared to the PS3's boomerang or Nintendo's TV remote.

Number Seven on the second page isn't really fair at all. Halo 3 wasn't on the Dreamcast? What the Hell? I mean, Christ, Halo 1 wasn't even published when the Dreamcast came out.

The Dreamcast is also the only way to play Marvel vs Capcom 2 in a form which didn't suck. :)

The Dreamcast wins for one simple reason - the coolest controller ever.

Playing Soul Caliber, with your miniature super-deformed character going off on the small LCD screen was too good. Not to mention the actual REAL uses it was put to in many games.

Not to nitpick, but I'd say the 32X was a bigger factor than the Mega CD.

Oh that I will give :) . The Sega/Mega CD I basically looked as the start of it, but the 32X allowed it barrel down the hill.

MvC2 was the coolest 2D fighter ever: even the versions you can get on PS2 don't blend the effects as well. GOOSE CHEESE FOR THE WIN!! :)

I wasn't a fan of the DC controller, but I didn't hate it. A lot of people did, I wonder why. It was heavy and bulky, but the Xbox whores don't mind that with the original Xbox controller.

Eh, I prefer Third Strike myself. But MvC2 gets a good prize for featuring Felicia.

Microsoft is a marketing company who happens to produce software (and some hardware).

They know that content is king, which is the reason they go to ridiculous lengths to provide backwards compatibility on their OS line. They also have a very big lineup of producers who are aiming for the Xbox360 too.

And the +$3 billion profit per quarter means they arent going anywere soon.
