iPod Shuffle for a 7 yo?

Post by Stravo »

I've been thinking of a special gift for my daughter for Christmas. I always build my gift giving around 1 or 2 really awesome gifts and then she gets the canon fodder gifts, etc. My thoughts turned to the lower end iPod shuffle - the 512MB version. She loves my iPod and listens to it when we're on the subway. She fifddles with the turnwheel and just loves the sound quality. She is fascinated by the notion that she has a playlist with her name on my iPod and she's quite comfortable around technology - she can use my satellite radio, she uses my DVD player and she inherited my computer a few months ago which she uses on a daily basis.

I tend to be a bit extravagent around Christmas time with my child. I love to shower her with gifts but I have to wonder am I being too ridiculous in giving her an iPod? This is not a cost issue its a simple issue of whether a 7 (turns 8 in Feb.) should have an iPod or is it too ridiculous?

Yeah, but I'd be warry of her taking it to school. But around the house or on journeys should be fine.

Feel free to ignore this advice since I don't have kids.

Oh the rule would be simple. The iPod is not for school. She can only use it at home or when she goes out with an adult.

I am told that Creative MuVo's are far surpirior to the Shuffles. But, other than that, I don't think it would be too bad.

Not having used a shuffle, I couldn't say about superiority. But, the MuVo's interface is significantly easier to use. Simply drag and drop the files as though it were an external hard drive. No messy proprietary software to deal with.

Using an iPod myself I figure with itunes I can just import her playlist onto the Shuffle but I have been looking at other flash players like that and I am tempted to get another for my mom and load it up with her spanish songs. I don't want to load another proprietary music management system onto my system so that actually sounds really cool. Thanks for the suggestions guys.

So long as it is not for school, I think it should be fine.

Sounds good! Just becarful of the neck strap. My friend had one, which he kept under his coat. During the winter (he bought it recently) the thing dropped off while he wasn't listening. luckely, somebody found it, and he got a free replacement from Macintosh.

I understand that the Sony flash players ("shuffles") are far superior to apples following, have a 50 hour battery and a beatiful screen.
I'd reccomend that, the Shuffle really isn't a good flash player compared to one with a screen.

I think its fine, aslong as there are clear rules where NOT to take it.

And your girl is one lucky person to get a shuffle.

MuVo's are much better than the Sony's or the Shuffle. Not only because it doubles as a flash key. But batterylife is excellent as well.(Not as good as Sony's)

For a younger child however it might be a better idea to go with the Shuffle as it does have a durability edge over Sony's and Creative's offering(Unless you case them in which case they are equal)

MuVo's however I must add can be found for as little as $39 on Newegg with a special or 49.99$ for the normal 256 meg models.
