Have a big problem...

Post by Superman »

I'm trying to get a friend's computer to work, but .Windows won't load. Instead of loading, I get an error that says the system32hal.dll file is missing.

Anyone have any suggestions? I can't find his XP disk (this is a factory-made HP) but I do have one that I own and his registry key is on the sticker on the case. I haven't tried to reinstall yet...

Also, would it be possible to copy this file via floppy from one of my computers and copy it directly into his system? How can I do this through DOS?

I just tried to run a recovery from an XP disk. When I tried to do that, I get an error that says IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL.

Make sure the version you are installing is the same as the one he already has a key for; his key may not work on the disk you are using for the install.

Try reading and doing this

But a word of causion, the key on the sticker do not work! It is just a proof of pursase on the computer.

If you find the HP cd then you can do this to read the real key.

Open the cd.

Find the Winnt.sif and open that file in notepad.

In the "UserData" section, the "ProductID" = KEY IS HERE

-Edit-
Ignore the first scentence, that key works for that computer, but I usually install a lot more than one, and finding the unique key is not an option.

Well, I ended up just reformatting the hard drive and putting an older copy of Windows XP on it. I used an older key to register it, and it worked. So the big problem is taken care of...

Just one more problem, I have three drivers that need to be installed now and I don't know what they are. This computer is an hp pavillion a300n, so I'm assuming I just need to find the drivers for the onboard hardware. How can I find what it is?

I need drivers for the video controller, universal serial bus controller and multimedia audio controller. Any ideas?

Thanks! Just one more thing. I don't know how to install the USB driver because I don't know what it refers to. What is the USB?

Small rectangular port in the back and usually also in the front of the case.

Looka at your mose if it is rectangular it is a USB if it is a circle it is a ps2 mouse.

So what does a yellow flag in the USB port section of the device manager mean?

Dunno, problem with the driver I think.

Try this.

Open device manager

Rclick on the yellow usb

Click update driver

Let windows update the driver,

Reboot and see if that fixed it.

Just so you know, the little yellow "flag" means the driver hasn't been installed, or there is a hardware conflict.
