Need Help with Network Shares (WIN NET ADMINS WANTED)

Post by Einhander Sn0m4n »

Okay, I got the network working due to proper application of the Linksys router and Voodoo Networking Rituals via the Magic Install CD, and thus, I have a nice Level 1 Windows Network Administrator skill.

Now my problem is thus: I have T3H-M0N0L1TH (this comp) sharing its F: drive (don't scream at me for sharing an entire drive; I know the risks!), and D4L3S-B1G-R3D-B0X (the new Athlon Cruiser we bought) sharing C:\NETSHARE. When I go to map a network drive, neither comp shows up on the other, something about a System Error 6118 when I try it by commandline.

Basically the reason why I want it fixed is so I can migrate all my shit from TM's F: to DBRB's C: without wasting a ton of CD-Rs doing it by sneakernet.

What OS do you have on each computer? Knowing this is rather important for Windows networking.

However a quick google search for "System Error 6118" got this as the 1st link

I've bolded the bit which should be relevent;
System error 6118 has occurred. The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available

SYMPTOMS: 1) After enabling ICS/ICF, you can't see any computes on My Network places. If you try, you may get "workgroup is not accessible". 2) If you use the net view command, you may receive "System error 6118 has occurred. The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available." message.

Resolutions:
1) This behavior can occur if you enable the ICF that will closes the ports for file sharing by default. To open these ports, right-click the network connection that is firewall protected> Properties>Advanced>Settings>Service Tab>Add, Enter 127.0.0.1) for the required Internet Protocol (IP) number. Enter UDP ports from 135 through 139, and TCP ports from 135 through 139 one by one (the external and internal port numbers should be identical).
2) This may occur if the workgroup name and the domain name are the different.
3) No master browser. Starting Computer Browser Service on one of w2k/xp computers should fix the problem

XP Pro on one, XP Media Center on the other. Computer Browser is on, ICF is off, and I'm not sure what the domain is or how to change it.

The workgroup name can be set in System Properties -> Computer Name -> Network ID. You might also consider trying to test out your network by navigating to \\IP_ADDRESS\SHARE_NAME directly to see if that works.

Phong, the Workgroup Name is TERRELL. Bounty, I have Kerio on both, and DBRB also has Norton Internet Security which it came with. Thanks GGS :)

Both computer have the same name for workgroup, right?
Also check if your firewall (Kerio) has your computers IPs in trusted zone.

Quick checklist

1. Check the network cables.

2. Disable any and all firewalls.

3. Ping one computer from the other computer, type "ping computername" in a command prompt.

4. Make sure that the are members in the same workgroup.

5. Make sure that you use tha same username AND password on both computers, you must have a password, file sharing do not work in XP wo a passord.

That should fix it.

They're good.

Shields deactivated...
Faram wrote:3. Ping one computer from the other computer, type "ping computername" in a command prompt.
Ping's good, less than one millisecond.
Faram wrote:4. Make sure that the are members in the same workgroup.
Good.

I think that's my problem. One's 'usa' no PW and the other's 'HP_Administrator' again with no pw...
Faram wrote:That should fix it.
All I have to do is fix the PW problem then?

Done and done.

Can I reenable the FWs now?

EDIT: Shields are raised back up, with frequency windows configged.

I can still see all the stuff on the other comp from either one.

Seconded.

And not an hour after getting it working, DBRB stops being able to see TM's share...

Windows naming resolution is sorta flunky...

So do one of two things.

1. Buy a server install and configure DHCP and DNS on that one.

Or...

Start up exploer and navigate to.

"C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc"

open the file "hosts" This file has no extension, and it is inportaint that it stays that way.

Add the IP adress for the other computer and add the computername like this:

192.168.0.100 xbox
192.168.0.20 bärbar

Save the file.
