If kids hear about killing, it should be graphic and disturbing. Sanitized killing only leads to kids not taking violence seriously enough.

I am curious, are there any "NON Religious" summer camps?

I think it funny that that the Boy Scouts kicked an Eagle Scout out for being an Athiest when there was no relgion in it when I was in the Scouts. I went to camp and unlike Lutheran camp, we did not have to do any religious activities.

And the Bible is?
Well, at least the Bible has a few stories that are somewhat interesting without violence or sex. I can't really think of a kickass Norse myth that doesn't have people slicing each other's heads off or something equally awesome. There are isolated segments of such, but no real complete parables.

I'd just stick to Tolkien for young kids, leaving the kickass Norse stuff for when they're a little older (7 maybe?)
The story of Logi is devoid of killing. And Tolkein has friggin' armies going at it and death everywhere!

Eh...it's hard to get any decent description about tolkien's epic army battles. He keeps the camera at a large distance and about all you get is a group clashing with another.

He's better on detail when he goes after specific characters, but the guy was so wordy that even this wasn't too hot.

Assuming a youngster can get past his wordiness and actually visualize the armies, its still nearly too wordy to get any detail worth a damn.

Why couldn't there be one like this when I was a kid....then again I believed in the Christian god at that time

I'm a spiritual person, not religious. However I don't expect my children to ever follow my beliefs, but to follow their beliefs. I hope to teach my children ABOUT religions and let them come to terms to God in their own way, like I have. I'm more concerned with teaching my children morals and how to keep themselves safe and respectable human beings. Religion can teach that, but religion can also go overboard which is something I'd like to avoid.

If my children decide to be atheists, then they're atheists. If they decide to be Christians, they will be Christians, regardless of my opinion. That's a very hard thing to do, but I honestly feel I have no choice. My children, if they will be as free spirited as I want to raise them, will make sure I have no choice. It's their beliefs, not mine.

Hopefully this will all go as planned, as I don't have any kids yet. ;)

Like everyone else (almost) here, I will tell them that I think there is no God when they ask me, but teach them honestly about all the religions out there, including readings from Holy Books and fun stuff like ancient mythologies and joke religions. I'll try to give them my critical eye about religion, but it's really their choice what they want to believe.

As to the earlier discussion about circumcision, I don't want to butt in, me-too or help the embers of a flamewar, but I'll just say that today if my dad had had my most sensitive body-part removed for any reason, and even worse for no reason at all, the chances of me ever speaking to him again would plummet dangerously.

After realing this thread again tonight I'm actually remined of an occasion when my niece asked me if i believed in god or not. I know she goes to church and is well on the way to becoming an active christian.

I told her that no i didn't believe in god. She asked why and I told her that i thought the storied from the bible stacked up with fairy tales and they beliefe in god was little more than a spiritual comfort blanket. I am mature enough emotionaly not to need a invisible friend to scare the monsters away.. But I also made it clear that that was my own personal view and she was to make up her own mind. She accepted this wekk enough. Ofcourse her mother freaked out and accused me of corrupting her child.
