I wonder if they're Disciples of Kuhn. Kuhn claimed that scientists are basically ruled by bias rather than data. He claimed that new theories only supersede old theories when a new generation supersedes the old generation with its outmoded ideas. He called this a "paradigm shift" (yes, this is the asshole who coined that phrase) and claimed that the best example was Einstein's relativity overthrowing Newtonian physics. Of course, he never addresses the fact that this "paradigm shift" just happened to coincide with the collection of new, more accurate data, and is thus far more logically correlated with a change in data than a change in bias, but that's par for the course with people like this.
