"It doesn't spin the same way" argument

Post by DPDarkPrimus »

I keep hearing the stupid arguement about how not everything spins the same way, therefore no Big Bang. I know it's incorrect, but I can't remember anything more detailed other than the fact that time and gravity is involved. Anyone with a better memory able to educate me again?

Why should everything spin the same way? In fact, if you took an object with starting angular momentum of X and expanded it, then the sum total of the angular momenta of all the fragments should also add up to X, even if some of it must be in opposite directions in order to make things add up.

While a normal explosion usually cannot be compared to a Big Bang, it suffices here.

In a normal explosion, you have turbulance. WTF would you think it all spins the same direction?

That's a silly argument. There are other forces at work besides just the force caused by the big bang.

For example; Uranus is thought to have been hit by a large planetoid that caused its rotation to be different.

I would still like to hear their explanation of why it should spin the same way; creationists do this all the time. They make some totally bogus prediction, point out that the universe does not match this prediction, and then say AHA!!! WE WIN!!!!

It's tantamount to asking why butterflies don't speak, and then saying "AHA! Evolutionists cannot explain why butterflies don't speak!" Just make up some totally absurd prediction which (unfortunately) dumb people won't immediately identify as absurd, and then crow in triumph that this prediction (which you falsely attribute to science rather than yourself) doesn't come true.

They constantly apply that "rebuttal". Just today I was in a chatroom where some super class creationist was saying medical science is bullshit because it has not found a cure to cancer!

That's... strange. It would be far more curious if everything did spin the same way. The claim is probably based on the erroneous notion that angular momentum would be present in the big bang singularity itself, combined with a total lack of comprehension of how angular momentum conservation actually works. Not to mention that angular momentum can't even be meaningfully defined for a general relativistic situation except in simpler spacetimes. (Worse, there may be no globally conserved quantities whatsoever.)

It's sad because they mistake this as being more complex and in turn evidence of an intelligent designer.

Interesting. I heard this just two weeks ago in a class from a student who tried to say that the Big Bang couldn't have happened. She looked like she was about 17 though, so nobody really said anything.

That's funny, we've had three in the past four years haven't we?

Not -all- cancers, but many of them.

It amaizes me that they somehow manage to operate a computer. My dog couldn't do it, yet I'm sure my my dog is smarter than that guy.
