Where's my disk space?

Post by The Jester »

Recently bought a new PC with a (supposed) 200GB SATA hard disk and have been going through all the motions of installing Windows XP on it, partitioning a 6GB drive but have noticed that there is only 120GB worth of unpartitioned hard disk space remaining. The PC was already pre-installed with a version of Windows XP on it, however I wanted to change the language version, and so removed all pre-existing partitions. The BIOS is reporting the HDD correctly, what I would like to know is where the remaining space has gone and how do I get it back.

Probebly the Windows formatted for only 120GB of space, should you reinstall the computer the windows XP disc will show you all 200GB and let you use them.

Deleted multiple replys from Ace.

And I thnk that it might have some sort of util partition, be careful about deleteing those, it might be needed for the system

How does one go about recovering a util partition?

I had the exact same problem as you when I installed windows. From what I read, it seems as if windows doesn't recognize the extra gb's in the install. I just went in with partition magic and expanded the partition to take up the unused space.

The original release version of Windows XP did not have a partitioning tool capable of making partitions greater than 120 GB in size. One thing you might try and do is make a 120GB partition and then use some bootable tool to expand it out to its proper size after you've gone to SP2.
