I don't think IS-2's would worry much about the 300 meter range lasers some of them haul around amoung other shitty weapons.consequences wrote:We're going with reality.
You forgot to mention the fact that the longest reanged weapon in the game goes less than a kilometer, diregarding artillery, and the artillery tops out at 20 klicks. You also forget that they deliberately fucked the tanks after one of the guys they had working for them designed the Demolisher, which could rape almost any mech under the original rules.
Question for the mech-heads around here

Idiots.
UAC-20s are 105mm autocannons and they cause significant damage to mechs. Most tanks mount 120mm guns. Figure it out.

Phantm Titans are the size of EVAs and mount Holofields, energy shielding and battleship-grade weaponry.

I want a Dark Kodiak. Relatively small, high firepower, and stealthed. Anything that can carry a bazooka with 625mm armor penetration is OK by me. The machinegun, grenades, and rockets are just icing on the cake. A big mech would be counterproductive for most actions anyway.

GURPS Mecha is more realistic than Battletech can hope to be and I don't mean it's more fun as a tabletop wargame (I'd like to play like that sometime, so far I use these gearhead books just for the fun of building stuff). I mean, no matter how you scale weapons, they always come wrong in BT. I still can't understand how smaller caliber autocannons have HIGHER ranges, and lasers are the shittiest of all weapons in RANGE?!?Typhonis 1 wrote:thats what gets me GURPS Mecha has decent ranged weapons compared to BT I mean 90 yrds for machine gun????cmon thats why to be evil I tripled the ranges
I talk from personal experience trying to convert Mechs to GURPS vehicles and mecha, I have a lot of real-life and a couple BT mechs, I have my own guidelines for these... still, if I try to make a 10 ton laser without watering down A LOT it basically vapes a mech in one shot and has nearly infinite range

I[/I] can carry a anti tank weapon with such performance. That is a impressive figure by the standards of 1975, compared to today's MANPADS Anti tank systems its pretty shitty. The Dark wrote:I want a Dark Kodiak. Effective range: 800 m
Penetration: 625 mm armor-grade steel
Heavy Gear Mecha is, by far, much better at that whole realism thing than most mecha. Tanks are a thing to be feared by all Gear pilots, especially when used competantly. Better armor, better weapons, more ammo, etc. etc.
The standard tank weapon on the MBTs is the Heavy Field Gun:
Effective range: 3200 m
Penetration: 800 mm armor-grade steel
and the Heavy Railgun:
Effective range: 4000 m
Penetration: 1225 mm armor-grade steel
In contrast, the primary weapons of most Gears are the Light Autocannon:
Effective range: 800 m
Penetration 65 mm armor-grade steel
and the Medium Autocannon:
Effective range: 1200 m
Penetration: 105 mm armor-grade steel
Standard Infantry Rocket Launcher, in comparison, is as follows:
Effective Range: 400 m
Penetration: 200 mm armor-grade steel
These are the stats straight out of the Heavy Gear books, so compare as you please with modern military capabilities.
Do not meddle in the affairs of insomniacs, for they are cranky and can do things to you while you sleep.

To ESB way back there, on 105mm chem jets (demolisher cannon) Vs. 120mm...Actually, the ChemJets (and IIRC, all BT A/C) are low velocity weapons (I think it was part of FASA's attempt to rationalize BT--THey're low velocity because they use a real powerful but real touchy explosive...)
And the whole Battletech universe is, in the words of a freind of mine on another board, something you "don't think about it too hard--it falls apart when you think about it..."...consider--an interplanetary state has only ~500 (areospace) fighters...WarShips cost several orders of magnitude more than a bunch of fighters that can take it out (and it doesn't take many), etc.
Heavy Gear looks cool, never played it though.
And pass me the O'Bengin (spelling: schlock mercenary) minitanks...

Mekton Zeta is also good a bit weird at times but good a 10 k laser has a range of 10 by 100 hexes each hex being 50 meters across and you can customize the weapons

May not destroy heavy armor, but it'll stop infantry charges or IFVs (or most Gears) dead.

I like Heavy Gear. But really, the above makes no sense. Does everything in the blast radius get penetrated to the extent of 324mm of this steel, or only a direct hit?Or the dreaded Vandal, with the Medium Artillery Missiles:

You are kidding, right? Unit-01 would tear it to little pieces and eat all of them. And if it's Berserker Unit-01 the Iron Giant could be aniihilated without any physical contact between the EVA and the IG.Exonerate wrote:Hmm... I think Unit-01 could probably take it on...
