SWG Players offered Refund for stolen fun.

Last week, just days after shipping the Star Wars Galaxies expansion pack Trials of Obi-Wan, LucasArts and Sony Online Entertainment revealed that it was going to give the the massively multiplayer online role-playing game a massive overhaul.

The update will introduce sweeping changes to the online game, such as redefining all characters into nine professions and eliminating some skills entirely, such as creature handling. While these and other changes will be introduced gradually, the initial reaction from many of Galaxies' players, some of whom are having years of progress eliminated or trivialized, has been quite negative.

To appease some of those angered by the reworking of Star Wars Galaxies, Sony Online and LucasArts are offering refunds to anyone with a Galaxies account in good standing who purchased the Trials of Obi-Wan before November 3. Players seeking refunds should send their name, address, telephone number, e-mail address, and Station Name to refunds@soe.sony.com. Alternatively, they can send written requests to the following address:

SWG Trials of Obi-Wan Refunds
8928 Terman Court
San Diego, CA 92121

All requests must be made by December 1, 2005.

Ouch. It's gotten that bad? I figure Sony should quit SWG while they're ahead. Already it's got all the marks of a game that'll be dead in months.

85 percent Jedi, 14 percent bounty hunters, 1 percent other? That's fair class distribution. :P

Burn in the Nine Hells and die, Galaxies, burn and die. May Sony forever rot with the infestation of a thousand maggots.

I honestly thought this game was going to be a massive success when it was being developed. What went wrong? SW + MMORPG should equal mega $$$. But instead they are now in the position of offering refunds?! It's almost unheard of in the computer industry.

They put an inept dev team incharge, who had no clue about the source material.

Can't say I'm hugely surprised by this, despite John Smedley lying his ass off at Slashdot.org, and saying that SOE hadn't noticed a rise in the number of account cancellations, alot of people are leaving, long time veteran players who had 2 or more accounts because they're fed up of being shit on.

If Lucararts wants a Online RPG of Star Wars, there'd better off buying the source code to a popular one and doing it themselves.

It's a safe bet to avoid games which advertise their expansion packs before the game is even in beta. That, I think, is the biggest reason I decided against SWG (despite my love of starwars).

Is it me, or do MMOs seem... cursed?
