As long as Def Jam Fight For New York is backwards compatible, I'll be happy.

Slightly related question to the main topic. Will the X-Box controlers be compatible with the X-Box 2?

No.

But third-party companies will probably come up with something.

The 360 controller is really similar to the S controller, anyways.

Hmm, that sucks. How much do you want to bet retailers will be offering those things on CD for sale on launch day?

I've got multi-mbps broadband so it isnt too much of a problem for me :P

I sure hope they come up with something soon. I have the Smartjoy FRAG for my X-Box.

I may be wrong but I am almost certain I saw an article stating that Microsoft is disallowing third party controllers until 2007.

What Microsoft wants is largely irrelevent. My Smartjoy FRAG works by tricking the X-Box into thinking its a proper signal from a normal controler. If someone can make an adapter so the old controlers work, then my mouse/keyboard-adapter will also work.

You underestimate Microsoft's lawyers, Aly.

The biggest thing is the whole announcement undermines what I've always found to be the biggest thing console players like about consoles: Ease of use. You take it, you pop game in, game work. No patches, no installations, none of the stuff of computer games.

While some people rant and rave about how only an idiot would buy the Core, or only an imbecile would not be running Live... Welcome to the Real World. We got lots of the dumb.

5% of the current X-Box population is on Live. More will come, but if you think it'll ever reach all? You're fooling yourself.

Nitpick; I believe it's closer to 10%. XBox Live hit over 2 million subscribers as of July 2005, and a little over 20 million Xboxes have probably been sold at this point.

The number I recall was 5%, but it's entirely possible it's an older one.

I have seen conflicting numbers on this, some say 10 and some say 5. *shrug*

I find it odd Microsoft would have their lawyers attack a simple adapter to be used to make old controlers playable.

They wouldn't actually. Microsoft might want to stop the vast majority of third party controllers for the X360, but they aren't going to sue to stop an adapter that maybe .0001% of the X360 owners will use.

EDIT: And I'm not surprised at all that Microsoft wants to shut out the third party controllers at first. Peripherals are a great way to offset early console hardware losses and Microsoft dominating the market would certainly be beneficial to their bottom line.

Thing is, if they don't stop a simple adapter from being made, many old 3rd party controlers should be playable.

Don't play Halo and Halo 2 on the Xbox 360 without getting the update.

According to Bungie's audio director, the audio sucks big time on the emulator that ships with the 360. It is an older version, and it can't play Halo 2 online, nor does it have good audio for support for Halo and Halo 2.

I believe that the Xbox 360 wired controllers, just use simple USB. So, a Smartjoy Frag for the 360 may be even easier to create. However, Microsoft has no current plans to allow xbox 1 peripherals on the Xbox 360. Which kills Steel Battallion from ever being on the 360, as well as the old "Duke" controllers.

What I am wondering, is if the 360's emulation will mean faster load times for things like textures, reducing the texture popping in Halo 2.

Nitram, as I said, Live is not required to get compatibility updates.

Sure, but you have to look at this from a business perspective. No matter how good the adapter, it simply won't be popular enough to make a difference to their bottom line.

How many people do you honestly think will be hooking it up online? The snail mail option sounds like a big hassel, but we'll see.

The web download -> CD-R sounds like the best option to me. It isn't much of a hassle for non-Live users and it's fast.

The Xbox connectors are basically just USB with different plugs. One of my friends made his own Xbox -> USB adaptor so that he could use his controller on his computer. The only technical hurdle for Smartjoy would be tricking the 360's software.

Yes, the Xbox's pads are USB, they are simply run to a different head.

The X360 controllers are straight USB and (even better) Microsoft has provided free software to hook up a X360 pad to a PC. Obviously an adapter would be a simple affair.
