Cloud seeding with silver iodide
Could anyone explain to me how cloud seeding with silver iodide (AgI) works, and if cloud seeding itself is known to be an effective means of causing precipitation?
So long, and thanks for all the fish

Cloud seeding allows a surface for water molecules to condense on when they're at a lower density than it would be for natural precipitation. The jury is still out on how effective it is, though.Zero132132 wrote:Could anyone explain to me how cloud seeding with silver iodide (AgI) works, and if cloud seeding itself is known to be an effective means of causing precipitation?

I would imagine that in the regions which most desperately need rain, you don't have a lot of clouds to "seed" anyway.

Yes, Wong has hit upon the key problem - cloud seeding only works if there is sufficient moisture in the air already to produce rain. And in a drought, for example, part of the problem is that you just don't have sufficient airborne moisture to begin with.
Assuming you do have enough water vapor hanging about, it can work but it's not 100%.

Then it's CaptainChewbacca's post you want - the silver iodide particles act as a nucleous for raindrops to form around. Why they use AgI I don't know - in nature, dust particles and the like act as nucleous.
If such nuclei do not exist then you can get super-cooled water vapor aloft, which has an irritating property of turning instantly to ice when it strikes something. In theory, seeding such a volume of water vapor would be the most effective means of producing precipitation.

Cloud seeding was abandoned by the majority of the meteorological community a while ago because there is no way to prove that it was cloud seeding and not natural phenomena that caused the cloud to rain. The proposed effects of cloud seeding can also be caused numerous different natural causes and that presents a major problem in trying to observe the effects of a cloud seeding experiment. It is the reason why cloud seeding as a viable way to affect storms was almost totally abandoned.
However, there are still countries and many large farm owners willing to pay exhorbitant amounts of money to conduct experiments into cloud seeding. The atmospheric scientists they pay still continually come to same conclusions they did 30 years ago. Of course while they still keep coming to the same conclusion they will gladly accept the grant money since it's those types of companies that pay the bills.
